While hunting on his father’s estate in Ireland he was kidnapped and impressed into the English Navy. He served as a midshipman for five years. He escaped and swam ashore during the blockade of Charleston during the Revolutionary War. He entered the Colonial forces under Gen. Nathaniel Greene at the Battle of Cowpens, SC, 1/17/1781 where he was badly wounded. He settled in North Carolina and later married Prudence Roberts. He died 1806/7 from pneumonia. His children include Joseph Sullivan, the eldest son, my 4th great grandfather.
