Ireland Reaching Out Publishes Landmark 2026 Global Diaspora Survey — Revealing an Untapped €3.5 Billion Opportunity for Irish Tourism, Food, Retail, and Financial Services

Over 2,700 members of the global Irish Diaspora surveyed show overwhelming appetite to reconnect with Ireland — through heritage travel, Irish products, investment, and digital community — offering a clear roadmap for Diaspora organisations and Irish industry alike.

Dublin, Ireland — 29th July 2026 — Ireland Reaching Out (IXO), the global charity dedicated to reconnecting Irish emigrants and their descendants with their ancestral homeland, today published the findings of its 2026 Global Diaspora Survey. Drawing on responses from 2,709 Diaspora members across the world, the survey paints a picture of a highly engaged, commercially significant, and largely underserved global community — and delivers welcome news for several key sectors of Irish industry.

A Diaspora Ready to Re-Engage

The results reveal consistent, strong demand across every dimension of Diaspora engagement measured. Four in five respondents (81%) want to connect online with others of Irish ancestry, while three-quarters (75%) said it is important to connect specifically with people linked to their ancestors' home locality — the very mission at the heart of Ireland Reaching Out's parish-based model. More than two-thirds (68%) are interested in sharing Irish cultural content within the Diaspora community.

"This survey confirms what Ireland Reaching Out has always believed — that the Irish Diaspora is not a passive audience waiting to be marketed to, but an active, willing community waiting to be properly resourced and connected," the organisation said. "The scale of demand should reshape how both Diaspora bodies and Irish state agencies think about engagement."

Good News for Irish Industry

The survey identifies specific, actionable opportunities for several sectors:

  • Tourism and Heritage Travel: With three-quarters of respondents prioritising locality-specific ancestral connection, Ireland's tourism and heritage sectors have a clear, addressable audience for genealogy-led travel products.

  • Food, Drink and Retail: A striking 66% of respondents (1,796 people) said they are interested in Irish products and services — a built-in, emotionally engaged consumer base that lowers the usual barriers to export market entry. This is a direct signal to Irish food and drink producers and retailers, and to agencies such as Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland, that the Diaspora represents a reachable and receptive market.

  • Financial Services and Investment: Respondents expressed significant latent appetite to financially support Irish businesses and communities, pointing to real potential for Diaspora bonds, heritage-linked crowdfunding, and community investment vehicles.

  • Talent, Recruitment and Enterprise: Interest in professional and business connections with Ireland suggests an underused pipeline of international talent, market knowledge, and investment for Irish enterprise.

  • Citizenship and Passport Services: Over half of respondents (51%) said they would like to hold an Irish passport, yet 83% currently hold neither an Irish passport nor citizenship — a substantial gap between aspiration and access with implications for policy and administrative services.

Taken together, IXO's economic modelling estimates that fully harnessing this Diaspora opportunity could generate an additional €3.5 billion to €7.5 billion in annual Irish economic activity within a decade.

A Community Worth Investing In

The survey also profiles the Diaspora community itself: respondents span the globe, are predominantly women (63%), and demonstrate deep, sustained loyalty — the majority have been engaged with Ireland Reaching Out for two years or more, with the single largest group active for five years or more. The near-absence of respondents under 30 highlights a clear generational opportunity: reaching the children and grandchildren of today's Diaspora is the next frontier for sustaining Ireland's global connections.

A Call to Action for Diaspora Organisations

Ireland Reaching Out is sharing these findings with Diaspora organisations worldwide and inviting collaboration on next steps — from joint digital community initiatives to co-ordinated engagement with Irish state agencies and industry partners.

"We're publishing this data because we want every Diaspora organisation, every Irish business, and every relevant government department to see the same picture we do: a global community that is ready, willing, and asking to be engaged," the organisation said. "Now is the time to act on it together."
