Born sometime in 1846 in a village or farm Rathnalean or Ranaleen, just outside Killarney, County Kerry. Father John, mother Julia (nee Mahoney). Married Jane Price 6th September 1881. A death notice for him in 1915 lists his sisters as Mrs Stack and Mrs O'Donoghue, of Carlton, making them originally Mary Murphy, then Mary O'Donoghue, and Johanna Murphy, who later became Johanna Stack.

Emigrated to Australia in December 1864 with his sisters Mary Murphy (later Mary O'Donaghue) and Johanna Murphy (later Johanna Stack), and cousin Johanna O'Sullivan. Possibly also travelled with cousins Jim and Garry (Garreth?) Stack.

From a document by a later Dan Murphy (the son of Ted and Gertrude Mary Murphy) dated 28.9.1981 says:

'Daniel Murphy was born in Rathnalean - either a tiny village or the name of the farm - just outside Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. The exact date of his birth is unknown but it was in the year 1846. His fatherrs name was John and his rnother's, Julia (formerly Julia Mahoney).

In December 1864, Daniel Murphy left Ireland for the port of Liverpool with his sisters, Mary (who later became Mrs. Donaghue) and Johanna (who later became Mrs. Stack?) and his cousin Johanna O'Sullivan. They embarked on the packet Steamer Great Britain which arrived in Melbourne in February 1865.

On the passenger list, Daniel is described as a "labourer", a common designation for Irish farm workers in those days. His age was entered as 20 which obviously is incorrect as he would have been only 18. He had spent some time prior to his embarkation studying for the priesthood but obviously decided that he was not suited for this life. It is possible that another sister, Julia, travelled on the same ship, or, if not on another ship about the same time. Two male cousins, Jim and Garry Stack, must have arrived about this time also and Garry married Julia but not before Daniel had married a Jane Price in 1881.'

In Melbourne, Daniel Murphy was a licensee of various pubs c 1884 - 1889.

With Molly Murphy he had several children: John, Daniel, James (all by 1890), Florence (Floss), Timothy (Ted), Jule, Alice, Thomas. John went to America just after the turn of the (20th) century and hadn't been heard of since.

Some other information was supplied by Molly Murphy (nee Burke) who married Daniel's son Jim.
