James Thistle (1787-1863) of Greaghclogh MULLAGH appears on record there in

1833 Tithe Records as "James Thrisel, Greaghclaugh Upper" with 11 Irish acres, 3 roods and 20 perches (about 18 statute acres)

Part of Greaghclogh (including James' farm #9 but not Moses' farm) was put up for sale in 1854 and those records show that Moses & James Thistle held the lease for #9 in joint partnership for, on a year-by-year lease.

In 1854, the part of Greaghclogh owned by Mrs Mitchell was sold in the Encumbered Estates Court. The records reveal that James held #9 jointly with Moses Thistle (farm #22) and that this lease was year-by-year, reviewed every November 1st. The conditions seemed rather strict as it mentions their holding included 1 rood & 18 perches of reclaimable bog which the teneant was bound to surrender "without notice, compensation, or reduction in the rent" at the whim of the landlord.

1857 Griffith's Valuation as James Thistle of farm #11a (with 11 acres of land an a house valued at 15 shillings per annum). Moses Thistle, who also appears on record here with a substantial holding at #22 also holds 9 acres of land at #14 beside him.

Their landlord was James Taylor MD.

James died on 26 NOV 1863 (no cert online)
