Through my maternal grandmother’s, mother’s, mother’s line I find the line trances back to an Elinor or Ellen Garvey of Dundalk, baptised about 1844; her parents being John Garvey and Bridget Sheals. She married John O’Connor in about 1864 and had a son Andrew born about 1865, before emigrating to England and having a daughter, Mary born in Lancashire about 1866. She was widowed in 1868 and married William Naylor in 1870 in Warrington, Lancashire; this marriage resulted in three children but she was widowed once again in 1877. Her third marriage in 1884 to James Powell, a widower (also from Ireland) took place in Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire but he mysteriously disappears from records, last seen in the 1891 census of Newton in Makerfield. James and Ellen had one child born within their union, James having had about five children from his first marriage.
Elinor or Ellen Powell died in Warrington, Lancashire in 1920 and was buried at St Mary & St John’s RC churchyard in Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire.
I hope this will honour a daughter of Dundalk and hope to connect with my Irish roots.
