Thomas “Tommy” LOUGHLIN

Thomas Loughlin,  known as “Tommy,” to “countless friends” was born in Limerick, Ireland on 3 Jul 1814. He migrated to Binghamton, Broome County, New York, USA “in his early youth.”

He was said to have been one of the first Irishmen to settle in the Binghamton, New York area. About 1855 he married Elizabeth ____, who was born in Scotland on 19 June 1831.  They had several children all born in New York state, including sons, Thomas, Jr.; William; and Dennis, and a daughter, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Loughlin, who married a Mr. Shea.

Thomas Loughlin, Sr., a farmer, “owned a 250-acre tract of land south of Ross Park in the town of Binghamton, [New York] and another tract of 180 acres in the town of Kirkwood, as well as some city property.”

Mr. Loughlin was described in one source as “short, with a scarcely perceptible stoop” and “an ever jolly face.” He customarily wore black clothes, his Prince Albert coat, and a broad black hat.”

Thomas’s wife, Elizabeth [O’] Loughlin died on 25 April 1894 and was buried in Spring Forest Cemetery.

Mr. Thomas Loughlin, Sr. “was a close friend of the late Rev. John F. Hourigan of St. Patrick’s church, the first Roman Catholic priest to establish a church in Binghamton.”

In 1909 Mr. Thomas Loughlin, Sr. was critically ill at the age of 95.  But he lived another four years, dying in 1913 at the age of 99.

In Thomas Loughlin’s 1913 obituary it was noted that Mr. Loughlin, [Sr.] “was unusually successful in his business of farming and was said to have left an estate worth about $20,000, the result of hard toil and careful involvement."

At the time of his death Mr. Loughlin was living at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Shea at 11 Mary Street.  At that time he was a member of St. John’s church.  He was buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Johnson City, Broome County, New York.
