Samuel METCALF, son of Peter and Bess METCALF, was born at Fort Faulkner, County Wicklow, Ireland in 1831.  He was baptized at old Castlemacadam Church, near Avoca, County Wicklow, Ireland on 4 Dec 1831. He emigrated with relatives to the U.S.A. ca. 1847/48.  By 1850 he was living in the household of his brother, Edward Metcalf, Sr. in New Diggings, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, USA.

About 1852 Samuel and his brother, William Metcalf went to California where they were gold miners and later operated a sawmill and a hotel.

Samuel Metcalf lived for many years in Nelson Point, Plumas County, California.

In 1867 Samuel temporarily traveled back to the midwest where he married Margaret/Margrate BRADY on 3 Sept 1867 in

Jo Daviess County, Illinois, USA. They later had three children:

       Jennie (Metcalf) Waterworth

       Edward T. Metcalf

       William H. Metcalf

Samuel died on 1 December 1902 and was buried at the Plumas California cemetery next to his wife and a brother, William Metcalf.

Samuel's wife, Margaret (Brady) Metcalf died on 28 Feb 1896.

Samuel's obituary in the Feather River Bulletin of Quincy, California said of Samuel Metcalf:

"He was an honest man and a good citizen."

Note: I would like to find a picture of Samuel Metcalf.

Also, would like to know why Samuel was born at Fort Faulkner, Wicklow, Ireland but the rest of the children of Peter and Bess Metcalf were born at Ballymurtagh, County Wicklow, Ireland [near Avoca].
