Speculation is that James was baptised in 1841, in Ballinakill, County Wicklow, son of James Powell. He had emigrated to England by the time of his first marriage, in Lancashire, in 1862 to Bridget McGrath, she died in 1877. His second marriage took place in 1884 in Lancashire to Ellen Naylor nee Garvey. He is last seen in the 1891 census of Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire and then disappears from the records.
