Rev. Fr. Michael McDermott

Rev. Fr. Michael McDermott

Gender
Male

Father Michael McDermott was a Catholic priest in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon during the Great Famine. He was very vocal and critical of the treatment of the tenants on the Hartland (Mahon) estates.

Fr. McDermott arrived in Strokestown in 1835, the same year as Major Denis Mahon, the first landlord to be murdered in retribution for famine evictions. As the famine deepened and various relief efforts were put in place, both men battled for social and political power. Mahon was a frequent critic of Fr. McDermott's relief efforts. And McDermott pulled no punches in denunciating, from the altar, the landlord's evictions and other actions.

The Murder of Major Dennis Mahon 1847

The events leading up to Mahon’s death epitomized much of what was wrong with pre-famine Ireland: the largely parasitical landlord class, the deep sectarianism that further divided rulers and ruled, and an underclass largely dependent on the potato and living on the margin of subsistence.

Roscommon Catholics' Campaign for Parliamentary Reform

With the arrival of Catholic Emancipation in 1829, Daniel O’Connell led a party of 39 Irish MPs pledged to repealing the Act of Union. During the following years it was O’Connell’s leadership of the Irish MPs which kept Lord Melbourne’s ministry in office and as a result O’Connell had much Irish patronage placed at his disposal.

Denis O’Conor (1794-1847) who was educated as a barrister and traveled extensively in Europe, supported the pro-Catholic agitation in Roscommon. Following the granting of emancipation in 1830, he was the obvious choice of the county’s liberal Catholics for the representation. The O’Conor Don, who declared himself in favour of reform and economies, and exerted himself, especially on the subject of Tithes, retained his seat for the rest of his life.
