Patrick Kennedy

Patrick Kennedy was born in Dunganstown near New Ross, Co. Wexford on the 16th of February 1823. He is most famed as being the paternal great-grandfather of US president JFK, and one of the people directly connecting JFK to Ireland. He was a farmer's son who worked as a cooper. In 1849 he emigrated to America with his fiancé Bridget Murphy (1827-1888), whom he married that same year. The couple had 5 children, 4 of whom survived to adulthood,

  • Mary L.

  • Joanna L.

  • John Kennedy (died at age 2)

  • Margaret M.

  • Patrick J.

Patrick J. would go on to marry Mary Augusta Hickey, also a child of Irish immigrants. Together they would have a child named Joseph Patrick Kennedy who would marry Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. These would become John F. Kennedy (JFK) parents. John F. Kennedy would later marry Jackie Kennedy.

Patrick Kennedy died in Boston of Cholera on the 22nd of November 1858, exactly 105 years to the day before JFK. He left behind his 31 year old widow with four children to raise.
