Biography:

Edward Metcalf, Sr., son of Peter Metcalf and Elizabeth "Bess" [Thense or Hense?] was born in Ballymurtagh, County Wicklow, Ireland ca. 1822. He was baptized at the old Castlemacadam Church [Protestant] in Avoca, County Wicklow, Ireland in 1822. His father was a copper miner.

About 1847 Edward Metcalf, Sr. and his father, Peter Metcalf and Edward’s brothers: Samuel, William, Peter, Jr.; and Henry Metcalf immigrated to the United States. According to the Metcalf family Bible, Edward’s mother and sisters died in 1847 within three months of each other--probably either in Ireland or on the ship over to the United States.

Soon after his arrival in the U.S. Edward Metcalf, then of Sault Saint Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan first married Mrs. Jane/Jean (Kane/Cain/Kean) Kearney on 18 August 1848 in Chippewa Co, Michigan. Her parents were Hugh KANE/KEAN and Bridgetta KENT of Ireland.

In 1850 Edward and Jane Metcalf were living in New Diggings, Lafayette Co, Wisconsin where he was a lead miner. They had two children: Elizabeth Metcalf born about 1849 and Peter Metcalf, [Jr.] born about 1853. It is believed that Jane died about 1863

About 1864 Edward married Margaret DAVIS of Galway, Ireland. They had eleven children and lived in Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. He was a farmer.

Edward Metcalf, Sr. died at the age of 82 in June 1900 from complications from injuries he sustained in a buggy accident. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. ##
