Patrick WILSON is my great great grandfather, father of my great grandfather, John WILSON (1866-1933) (born Newtownards, Down and died Nova Scotia, Canada), and husband of my great great grandmother Mary Ann ADAMS.
Both Patrick and Mary Ann were born in Ireland.
The family moved to Kirkintilloch, Scotland sometime between the 1871 and 1881 Scotland Census'. There, in 1881, John's age is listed as 14, which has been proven correct through John's civil birth registration. This makes the 1881 Scotland Census the closest estimate for the birth years of Patrick (abt 1823) and Mary Ann (abt 1827).
Both 1881 and 1891 Scotland Census confirm that Patrick, Mary Ann, and John were all born in Ireland (although I have searched Scotland's people for birth, baptism, and marriage records for them as well.)
The 1881 Scotland Census also includes Patrick's occupation as "stonebreaker" and at his son John's marriage in Scotland, 4 Oct 1889, his occupation is listed as road surfaceman. 1891 lists him as general labourer.
At his death in Kirkintilloch on 22 Feb 1893 their son John was the informant. He indicated that Patrick's father's name was James WILSON (deceased), but the mother's name was left blank.
I have no official records (including birth, baptism, or marriage) of Patrick WILSON or Mary Ann ADAMS before the birth of their children:
Margaret WILSON 9 Mar 1864, Mill Street, Newtownards, Down. No baptism record found. Margaret died at the age of 8, 15 Apr 1872, Newtownards Workhouse.
John WILSON 18 Aug 1866, John Street, Newtownards.
John was baptized 30 Dec 1866 at "Newtownards Mission" which became Greenwell Street Presbyterian shortly thereafter.
I've worked with a few different genealogists in Ireland. One searched the records for County Down, specifically but he found no official records for Patrick or Mary Ann.
I have many DNA connections with people in Antrim and Tyrone, but we have no idea how our families are tied together.
I manage 8 different DNA tests, including my own, on several different sites. Two of my are male 2nd cousins from different branches of the WILSON line. Their advanced Y-DNA (male line only) test results confirm that they are haplogroup R-FTC60557. Their Y-DNA has been added to several group projects, including the WILSON surname project. They have no other WILSON matches there, but many Y-DNA matches with people whose surnames are O'REILLY, REILLY, RILEY, etc. so I was advised to add them to that surname project as well. The genetic genealogist who manages the REILLY group confirmed: "So there is little doubt that your direct male line goes back to the O’Reilly Clan of Breifne (in and around modern-day county Cavan) (about 1400 CE) You can read some background information on this Irish Clan here ...

This is useful background information but it does not really help you identify where your Wilson line originated."
