Son Thomas's birth record states Matilda's birthplace as County Armagh, this contradicts the Scottish census returns, where husband Thomas's place of birth, County Down, was ascribed to both partners. Census returns, marriage and death records show a 5 year variance +/- of the estimated 1823 birth year.

Matilda married Thomas Joyce in Dunfermline where they had 9 children. After Thomas's death, Matilda became a stoneware dealer and married Charles Cahill (aka Cathol) in 1878 in West Lothian where she passed away in 1892.
