Her father was employed as the Master of Fermoy Union Workhouse, a position that was later taken up by her brother Francis Martin.

In 1892, Mary Francis married Christopher Shaw. The pair relocated to New York where they had four children, but only one, Herbert Francis Shaw (1901-1980) survived to adulthood.

Mary Francis' husband Christopher died in 1904 in Philadelphia.

The 1911 Irish census shows that Mary Francis and her son Herbert Francis moved back to Ireland and lived in her ancestral home of Fermoy. Prior to this they had been living in Liverpool from 1904 to 1910.
