Martin Griffin was the son of Patrick Griffin and Mary Cunningham. He was born anytime from 1840 to 1846 in County Clare. His parents might be Pat Griffy and Mary Cunningham from Doora Kilraghtis Parish. He came to Australia about 1856 and settled in Bathurst, NSW where he worked as a miner and labourer. He married Bridget Shea in 1873 whose father Daniel was  from Glenbeigh Kerry and mother Mary Cantwell from Borrisoleigh Tipperary. Martin and Bridget had six children: Mary, Catherine, Honora , Bridget, Denis and Martin. His youngest son Martin Joseph Griffin was 11 times mayor of Bathurst and was known for initiating many public works including the infamous Mount Panorama race track. His father died in 1896 in Bathurst.
