Parents were Patrick Burke and Mary Glenney Burke.  Listed with his family on ship's passenger list arriving in the United States on 12 November 1847.

The family settled in Will Co., Illinois but John went to Mississippi with 2 of his brothers looking for work on building a bridge.  They joined the Conferate Army and John was killed in the battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, USA on 3 May 1963.
