Jeremiah Hayes was born about 1829 and emigrated from Adare, County Limerick in 1857. For most of his life he lived in or near Metuchen, New Jersey. His occupations in New Jersey were listed variously as laborer, farmer, railroad worker (probably for the Lehigh Valley Railroad which passed by his farm in Metuchen) and grocer.

In 1859, he married Ann O'Connor who had emigrated from Cranford, County Donegal during 1852. They were married in New York City.

Jeremiah returned to Adare late in life (age 77) as is shown by a passenger list showing him returning from Adare to the port of New York City on 3 Jun 1906.

Jeremiah and Ann had seven children, three of whom lived to adulthood.
