Hugh Cunningham was born at 8 Downing St in Belfast. His father was Samuel Cunningham and his mother was Eliza Mulholland- the family was from Ballymena and Hugh was the youngest of his family and only one to be born in Belfast. The family lived in Boundary Street for many years and Hugh's father worked as a carter until he was blinded by a whip. He married Mavis McKee and they lived in Alliance Avenue and later Enfield Drive off the Woodvale Road. He worked as a barman and spent many years as manager of the Everton pub on the Crumlin Road. After seeing out the worst of The Troubles, Hugh emigrated after he retired; going to Australia with his wife and son's family-his daughter already lived ther with her family. He died in 1973 after only one year in Australia.

The Cunninghams were from the Ballyscullion /Taylorstown area originally.
