John Carson left Belfast in 1900 to sign up with the Cape Mounted Police to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. When the war ended in 1901 John decided to stay on in Cape Town and in 1903 he was joined by his wife Margaret (nee Woods) and their 5 children - Matthew, Patrick, Kathleen, Mary-Ellen & Josephine. Since then a further 3 generations of Carson's have lived happily as Irish Africans.

I have been able to trace our Irish line of Carson's back to Matthew Carson (c 1840) who was married to Catherine Molloy in Dublin in 1868 in St. Thomas Catholic Church. Matthew's fathers name was James (my Great, Great, Great Grandfather) but because of the scarcity of reliable records from around that era I've hit a bit of a brick wall prior to that. My DNA results link me to several Carson families living in Ireland, the USA, Canada and some in Eastern Europe, and I would be really pleased if I could get a bit of help from anyone who may be able to help me join the dots on our Irish Carson family from prior to 1840. Likewise; I'd be more than happy to share any of my 15 years of research if it would help anyone else in the group to establish their Carson lineage.
