On 13th April 1856 he married Bridget Bergin, a native of Coolgreany Gowran, Kilkenny, Ireland who was aged 21, (baptized 11 Jan 1835).  They were married in the Roman Catholic Church at West Maitland NSW. David died on 27 Jun 1908  at Bona Vista, Paterson near Maitland, and was buried in the Paterson Cemetery NSW.

We know that David had a brother Samuel born about 1842 in County Down, Ireland. Samuel emigrated to the United States in 1865, and married Sarah Ann Campbell in 1871 in Stamford Conneticut USA. After Sarah died in 1877, Samuel returned to Ireland with his two children, Charles and Alice, then went to NSW to join his brother David Dunning in 1880. Samuel died in Maitland NSWin 1890.
