Searching for information on Timothy Harrington of Borrisloeigh

Tipperary

I'm at a road block in researching my family history and would love a hand.  I have gone back to a Timothy Harrington (believed born about 1812) who emigrated to Australia from Borrisoleigh on the Chowringhee in 1852 with his wife Anna (nee Burke) and children Anne, John, James and Catherine.  I have some reason to believe his father was Edward Harrington and his mother was Margaret Shanahan, but cannot find any records to confirm this.

Anna Burke's Mother was Catherine Maher and her father was John Burke. I believe she was from Rusnamulteeny.

I believe Anna and Timothy may have had several children who died young (Edmund, Cath and Margaret), and who consequently did not make the journey to Australia. They had a further child either on board the Chowringhee or in Australia, Ellen. I believe their daughter, Catherine, married a James Hart in 1872 in Melbourne.

Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kerry,
First place I look is on a ship list I have. May be a sister to Timothy.
HARRINGTON Michael 1851 38 Borrisoleigh Edmund / Margaret nee SKINNER both dead {Sis=Mary, marr to James Brennan&Cous=Ellen (contd.} } Ship = St. Vincent

Ellen's record is below. The townland is Cullahill, Borrisoleigh.

Hi, I meant the cousin Ellen listed in my previous posting could be a sister to Timothy.
I was looking through the Church books and there are a lot of Harrington people in the area.
Back as far as 1814 but I couldn't see an Edward/Edmund as the father.
In the Tithe records there wasn't an Edmund/Edward listed either.
The parents names Edward/Edmund and Margaret Shanahan, were they on a document?
Deaths are not listed until 1864.

There is a Margaret Harrington death in 1910 see below.
She was Margaret Dwyer married to an Edward Harrington.......so be careful when searching.

Hi Margot,

Thanks for answering so quickly.  I don't think Ellen is Timothy's sister.  From what I have found out, Timothy was born about 1812, married on 7/2/1837 and died in Yendon, near Ballarat on 23/3/1888. Timothy and Anna (nee Burke) emigrated to Australia on the Chowringhee sailing from Plymouth in 1852.

Timothy's death cert lists his parents as Edward Harrington and Margaret Shanahan. Anna died on 2/11/1902 and her death certificate lists her parents as Catherine Maher and John Burke.

From Timothy and Anna's marriage record I believe Anna may have come from Rusnamulteeny.

They must have gone straight to the Ballarat goldfields on arrival because both Timothy and Anna appear to have been involved in a miner's rebellion in 1854, now referred to as the Eureka Stockade. Certainly Anna is mentioned in records of that time.

I'd really like to verify their parents if possible, but I know the records from that time are incomplete.  Any further assistance you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kerry

Hi Kerry,
This is a better record of 1852 see below.
It shows Ellen was 2 years old.
That's why I put the Baptism record in for you.
I have just picked up a record from 1841, this is the actual Ship record from 1841 is for a Mary Brennan has her parents as
Edmund Harrington and Margaret Shannahan,  It's in Ancestry.
The ship list that I use has .............though it's been typed as Shinners
BRENNAN Mary 1841 21 Templemore Edmund HARRINGTON ,agent&farm er / Margaret SHINNERS.b.d. {w/o James,26+Martin,2.75&Mary,1 2mths,Sep12.} Gilbert Henderson
When Mary married James Brennan she must have moved to Templemore.

So the Michael who I sent earlier is the brother to Timothy and now Mary.
If you are a member of Ancestry you would have seen these, always look at the original document.

Hi Margot,

Yes I had looked in Ancestry and found the emigration docs. In one, Ellen is detailed as being 2, and in the other she is detailed as being an infant.  The baptism records you have found do indicate that she was born in Ireland before they sailed for Australia.

The ship record for 1841 is interesting, because, if this Margaret is Timothy's sister, she came to Australia very early, and almost ten years before Timothy and Anna.  My  concerns are that Timothy's death cert does state that his father is Edward, not Edmund, but this may be explained if his son-in-law, James Hart, had made a mistake. Also the surname of the mother, Shinner, not Shanahan. Do you think this is a transcription error?

Are Edmund and Edward used interchangeably in the old records?

I have learned not to rely too closely on spelling of names, and dates of birth.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I identify Anna Burke's parents?  I have looked extensively in Ancestry and Family Search without success.

Hi Kerry,
You say.........
Shinner, not Shanahan. Do you think this is a transcription error?
Yes, having said that it's the hand writing at that time.
I had to correct someone as they had Margaret Lee wife .......as the name and it was Margaret his wife. so his not Lee.
Are Edmund and Edward used interchangeably in the old records?
Yes,  either can be used.  Edmund or Edmond, some records have Edw so use Edw* when searching and it picks all spellings.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I identify Anna Burke's parents?
This must be him in Griffiths Valuation.  He is the only John Burke listed in the towmland. Spelling different............Rosnamulteeny.

Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie)

On this map.....
Modern and Contemporary Maps (askaboutireland.ie)
where the red square is look for the "N" in Glenkeen zoom in and look for Number 1 and Number 2.
That is where they were. On the top right hand corner of the map you will see a BAR move it to Modern map.
a road R498 on the dogleg you will see Collohill, this was the name on the marriage.
You would have to look in the Parish book to find Anna's birth.
Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI
If I get time I will look. Going out shopping.

Hi Kerry,
Found Anna as  Ann Bourke.
See below.    Maher can aslo be Meagher.

There may be others born to John and Kitty you would have to look from page 40 in the registers books.
...oh yes Catherine can be Kate or Kitty.

Hi Margot,

Not sure whether I sent my last post thanking you for your help.  So thank you again. Your assistance has been fantastic. Just another question.  How far back to these records actually go?  If we continued, would we find older records?

Keep safe.  We're lucky here that we have virtually no covid in the community now, but I read that the UK is not so fortunate.

Cheers

Hi Kerry,
So sorry, records before Church records and the 1823 Tite records are the earliest that are online, unless Landed Gentry.
There are Harringtons in the area, we go through Borrisoleigh every year, sadly not this year.
I am in Wales in the north, the south part has been hit hard with it.

Hi Margot,

I'm sure I responded to you but can't see my response posted on this board.  So again, thank you.  Clearly my ancestors are not landed gentry so I may have to be satisfied with what I've got.

Thanks for all your help.

Keep safe and please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Cheers

Hi Kerry,

Your Harrington ancestors and my Harrington ancestors may have been related.

My 3 x Great Grandparents - Matthew Harrington (abt 1815-1865) and Margaret (Peggy ) Hayes (abt 1802-1885) were married in the same parish in Borrisoleigh in 1832 - They also emigrated to Victoria, Australia.

Matthew Harrington's death certificate lists his parents as Timothy Harrington and Mary ?.

The Mathew in my tree would be the same generation as your Timothy and may have been cousins.

Their fathers could perhaps have been brothers. I have attached the parish marriage record and death certificate of my Matthew Harrington.

Cheers,

Stephen
