Over 200 years later, a memorial for Sam Lister
Fermoy (Cork)
Sam Lister, Ensign of the 84th Regiment of Foot of the British Army, drowned in a swimming accident in June 1813. There are several reports of his burial location in Castlehyde graveyard, Fermoy, County Cork. However, there ws no headstone to his memory. On their first visit from Australia to the graveyard, Jan Van Gessel and her sister Jen were surprised that there was no memorial. When they returned to Austraila, they raised funds to have a memorial erected. In April 2025, while on a trip to England, they returned to Fermoy to see the memorial at Castlehyde. Jan and Jen were very pleased with the support they received from Ireland Reaching Out.
