Cork

Kate Tassone, from Rhode Island, USA, was anxious to visit the places her ancestors were from around Skibbereen and Bantry, County Cork. She had done some research herself but was unable to locate her great-great grandfather, Jeremiah Regan, in the 1901 census.

In advance of her visit, IrelandXO volunteer Kieran Jordan had assisted Kate with some research. He was able to locate Jeremiah in Waterford on the night that the census was taken in 1901. In Waterford, he was a boarder in a house, had the occupation of carpenter/journeyman, was aged 47 and was born in County Cork. All of this fitted very well with other information that Kate had. As recorded in the 1911 census, Jeremiah was a Barytes miner, probably working in the mines at Deryginagh, County Cork where he lived with his family. Jeremiah’s daughter had married in Durrus, where her great-great grandparents had died; another place for Kate to visit.

Kate remarked, I really appreciate what your organization does…. I was able to make it out to Dromore and over to Durrus and it really helped tie myself and my family to Ireland in a new way. Thank you again for your time and efforts.
