HOPKINS of Baltinglass

Wicklow

There is a recent tombstone at Baltinglass RC Cemetery for

Bridget Hopkins who died in 1943 at 70

Her husband James who died in 1949 at 77.

I believe that James was born near Shillelagh to a James Hopkins c1841 and an Ann Fox.

Although these Hopkins were Roman Catholic, I believe they may descend from a CoI family and am looking for some confirmation

There was a marriage between James Hopkins and Anne Fox on March 4 1862 at Clonegal RC.   The item lists them as resident at Ballisland (don't know what "ecrum residentia" means but I assume it would means residence).   Also am not sure if it refers to the bride or groom or both.

Their parents are left blank in both cases...too bad.

On June 7 1863 they baptised a son William at Clonegal RC while still residing at Ballisland (no Civil Birt Reg).  I have found no further trace of him.

On Dec 17 1865 they baptised a son Nicholas at Clonegal RC while still residing at Ballisland. Likwise I have found no further trace of him.

The family had moved to Baltinglass area before 1868 where they baptised daughter Anne.

As the couple resided at Ballisland, it would suggest that James was somehow related to the Hopkins of Minmore, Ballard or Garryhasten, but I find no such link.  Naming the first son William might point to James' father being a William and born c 1820 or so?

There was a William Hopkins who married a Mary Hopkins and they lived at Drummin which would be in the right area and time but they were C of Ireland.  Unless of course James converted when he married Anne Fox
