You don't mention whether the couple was Roman Catholic or Church of Ireland. Bray Roman Catholic records start in 1792 and the records for the Bray Church of Ireland parish start in 1667.

I did not find a marriage record for this couple on the subscription site Roots Ireland.

I did find a June 9th 1793 marriage for an Esther Exshaw to a John Healy. The marriage was held in the RC church in Bray.

Hello Patricia,

I found the marriage index for Thomas Exshaw and Susannah Nairac at the subscription Ancestry.com website.

In turn, the index at Ancestry.com was obtained from records at the Geneanet Community Trees Index.

The marriage record shows that Thomas and Susannah were married on 26 December 1749 in Dublin, Dublin, Leinster, which means the marriage took place in Dublin City.

The index also shows that Thomas was born in Dublin on 4 November 1749, and that his parents were John Exshaw and Faith Walker. Also included in the index is Thomas's date of death. He died on 17 January 1782. His place of death is not recorded.

In addition the index shows that Thomas and Susannah had a son named John Thomas Exshaw.

See the index below:

Attached to this reply is the marriage license index for Thomas Exshaw and Susannah Nairac as recorded in the "Dublin, Ireland, Probate Record and Marriage License Index, 1270-1858."

The marriage license entry on the page is indicated by the black arrow.

Next is the marriage index for Thomas's parents, John "Ecshaw" and Faith Walker, who were married on 23 February 1747. Their "residence place" is listed as Saint "Auburghs," Dublin.

Saint "Auburghs" is an index transcription error, as the name of this Civil Parish is Saint Werburgh's, located in Dublin City.

The index is from the Ancestry.com collection, "Ireland, Abstracts of Wills and Marriages, 1620-1923," sourced from the National Archives of Ireland. See below:

Ireland, Abstracts of Wills and Marriages, 1620-1923

Name John Ecshaw

Record Type Marriage

Marriage Date 23 Feb 1747

Marriage Place Ireland

Residence Place Saint Auburghs, Dublin

See the attachment for a copy of the original handwritten marriage record for John Ecshaw and Faith Walker.

Because of the handwriting, the marriage record can be a challenge to read. Below is my transcription of the marriage record. You'll see that at the time of marriage John Ecshaw was a "Bookseller" in Dublin.

"Ecshaw John of the

Parish of Saint Werburghs

Dublin Bookseller

And Walker Faith of the same parish SW

& dated the 23d February

1747"

NOTE: I have to mention here that not all the records you'll see in this reply from Ancestry.com and Geneanet Community Trees Indexes, come with original source material, such as the 23 February 1747 marriage of John Exshaw and Faith Walker above, linked from Ancestry.com

Many of the records found at Ancestry.com and Geneanet Community Trees Indexes are user submitted, and may be subject to errors. Look at these unsourced records as finding aids, or indirect evidence for the time being, rather than direct proof of a birth, baptism, marriage, or death. END OF NOTE

According to the marriage record, both John Ecshaw and Faith Walker were living in the Dublin City Civil Parish of Saint Werburgh's. This means it's possible that John and Faith were married in the St. Werburgh's Church of Ireland, which still stands, and is located in Werburgh Street, Dublin 8, Dublin City. The church opened for worship in 1719.

Attached to this reply is an Ordnance Survey Map of the St. Werburgh's Civil Parish in Dublin. The map is from the 1829 to 1841 time period, and was accessed at the Tailte Eireann website.

The location of St. Werburgh's Church of Ireland is indicated by the red arrow.

I next found the December 1782 death index for Thomas Exshaw at the free irishgennealogy.ie website, which shows he was buried from the Clondalkin Church of Ireland, County Dublin.

You can access the death index at: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=894b618d15-5291

The Google Map at the following link shows the location of St. John's Church of Ireland in Clondalkin: https://tinyurl.com/3fm5twv5

The Find A Grave website shows that a John Exshaw and an Angel Exshaw are buried in the St. John's Church of Ireland Churchyard. John and Angel may have been the children of John Exshaw and Faith Walker.

Following is the Find A Grave entry for John Exshaw, who was born in 1751, and died on 6 January 1827 at the age of 74: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/297333436/john-exshaw

This next link will bring you to the Find A Grave memorial for Angel Exshaw, who was born in 1755, and died on 25 October 1787 at the age of 32: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/297333472/angel-exshaw

The search page for the St. John's Church of Ireland Churchyard at the Find A Grave website can be accessed at: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2522860/st.-john's-church-of-ireland-churchyard

I then uncovered the church burial index for Angel Exshaw at the irishgenealogy.ie website.

She died on 28 October 1787 and was buried from the Clondalkin Church of Ireland Ireland.

You can access the burial index at: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=894b618d15-5396

I didn't find the burial index for John Exshaw at the irishgeealogy.ie website.

Back to the Ancestry.com and the Geneanet Community Trees Index, I located further information about Susannah Nairac, which includes her date and place of birth, and the names of father and mother, who were Antoine Henri Paul Nairach, and Anne O'Connor.

She was born in Dublin City in 1761.

The index also includes her marriage to Thomas Exshaw in 1779, and the marriage to her second husband, Henry Marie Salaun de Kerbalanec, which took place in Saint-Pierre, Département d'Outre-Mer (Saint-Pierre), Réunion (Reunion), on 23 déc. 1829 (23 Dec 1829).

Also included in the index is the child she had with Thomas Exshaw (John Exshaw) and the names of the children she had with her second husband, Marie Salaun de Kerbalanec.

The index further shows that Susannah died on 23 December 1829 in "Port-Louis, Port Louis (Port Louis), Maurice (Mauritius)."

Concerning Susannah Nairac Exshaw and her second husband Henry Marie Salaun de Kerbalanec, I found their Ancestry.com/Geneanet Community Trees Index, which shows they married in Saint-Pierre, Département d'Outre-Mer (Saint-Pierre), Réunion (Reunion), on 15 July 1788.

Saint-Pierre, Réunion, is an island east of the island of Madagascar, and southwest of the island of Mauritius. If you recall from a previous index, Susannah died in Mauritius on 23 December 1829.

See the Bing Map of Madagascar, Saint-Pierre, Réunion, and Mauritius at: https://tinyurl.com/mrx5wshx

The Ancestry.com/Geneanet Community Trees Index further shows that Henry Marie Salaun de Kerbalanec was born in Morlaix, Finistère, Bretagne, France on 18 August 1750, and died on 4 April 1832 in Port-Louis, Port Louis (Port Louis), Maurice (Mauritius).

The index also shows that Susannah and Henry had three children, Achille Henri Salaun de Kerbalanec; Anne Eliza Salaun de Kerbalanec; and Antoinette Henriette Salaun de Kerbalanec.

Patricia, in your message to Ireland Reaching Out, you had mentioned that Susannah Nairac and Thomas Exshaw were "de Bray," that is, from Bray, County Wicklow.

I didn't uncover any records for them or their children living in Bray, though it is possible that they had lived in Bray, either individually, or as a married couple, at some time during their lives, as Bray, Wicklow, is just south of Dublin City. See the Google Map: https://tinyurl.com/2rcfby6x

As you've noticed in this reply, many of the records were found at the Ancesry.com subscription website, which included links to the free Geneanet Community Trees Index.

There is also an annual subscription option at the Geneanet Community Trees Index to access even more records.

Ancestry.com, linked to the Geneanet Community Trees Index, will have many more records concerning Susannah Nairac and Thomas Exshaw, and their son John, and Susannah Nairac and her second husband, Henry Marie Salaun de Kerbalanec, and their children.

This reply includes only a sampling of the records available online for them and their respective families at the Geneanet Community Trees Index.

But again, caution is needed. Many of these user-submitted records do not come with original source material, such as birth, baptism, marriage, or death records, as previously noted in this reply.

With Best Wishes,

Dave Boylan
