Walsh, Rossiter, Breen, Leary of Wexford Town

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I wasn't able to locate baptisms for any children of John Walsh and Mary Ann Leary nor a marriage record for the couple in Wexford. Neither could I find a marriage record for Patrick. It may be that these events took place in a parish and at a time that predates parish records. Did any of the family emigrate?

apologies for the delay in replying to your post - am bargaining on being late for my funeral also!  John Walsh married Mary Anne Leary in Wexford in May 1841, just says Catholic Parish of Wexford.  Their witnesses were Nicholas Walsh and Christy Butler.  There was a John Walsh in Abbey Street in the Griffith's Valuation with a John Butler a couple of doors away.  The landlord was John A Hogan and an Alice Hogan was a sponsor to Mary, one of their children in 1848.  Other children were;  Anne 1834, John 1840, Thomas 1843, Patrick 1844, William 1846, Margaret 1850.  All information gleaned from days and days  - and then yet more days, studying the Catholic marriage and baptism records for Wexford Town.

Patrick Walsh ( 1844 ) of John Street, our great grandfather, married Mary Rossiter ( 1842 ) of Duke Street, in the Catholic Chapel of Wexford  -  Rowe Street?? -  in April 1866.  Perhaps you could not find this marriage as Mary was a widow and her entry reads Mary Furlong alias Rossiter.  Her parents were William Rossiter and Bridget ( Biddy ) Breen, who had married in Piercestown in 1835.  I haven't yet summoned up the courage to chase this couple down in the records, but I do know that they had market stalls in Custom House Quay. 

None of the above emigrated but their children did, to Australia, America, and London.

 

I am searching for information for a relative in Canada regarding their grandfather,  John Walsh. . I know that his father's name was Patrick, he was from Co, Wexford and that he was born about 1869/1870. I have been researching this for some time and have reason to believe that he could be a son of Patrick Walsh and Mary Rossiter. I'd appreciate it if anyone had any information on this.

The John Walsh in question moved to Dublin probably around 1890, he married twice,  first time in 1894 &  second time in 1912. He had 2 daughters from his second marriage.

1901 Census John Walsh gave his occupation as Builders Labourer. and his age, 31.

the information that I have on our Walsh family comes from the grand-daughter of Pat & Mary Walsh, Francie Dukelow, who lived in Arklow, via another cousin, Dan McCarthy of Dublin.  She had it that Patrick Walsh and Mary Rossiter / Furlong's second eldest son, born Wexford Town December 1870 christened John Joseph but was always known to the family as Joseph.  In the 1901 census he is listed as Joseph Walsh, corn merchant's clerk, along with the Walsh family in John Street.  I have tried without any success to find him in the 1911 Irish census, and the family said that he had gone to America by then, so I don't know if the John Walsh that you are referring to is the same person.  Nobody has our John Joseph going to Dublin.

Thanks for the reply, No, it doesn't seem as if  is the same John Walsh that I have in mind. The only reason I was thinking about the Mary Rossiter connection is that I had done a search on all children called John Walsh whose father was called Patrick born 1869/1870 in Wexford. . I just found 2, one whose mother was Catherine Murphy & the other Mary Rossiter. I ruled out the Catherine Murphy connection because in the 1901 Census John Walsh is still living with his widowed mother in Carrigbyrne, while I know that the John Walsh I'm looking for was in Dublin in 1901.

Yes, sorry you are correct about that marriage for Patrick and Mary - rootsireland doesn't hold any marriages for that parish but Ancestry.com does - the former site has also just added the baptisms for the parish in the past few days which is great. You can actually see Patrick's baptism on Ancestry.com too or directly on the nli site if you look at the relevant parish under registers.nli.ie - he was baptised on 14th August. You could also have a look to see if there are any other children now that you can see the registers online. It seems that there was also a Thomas (Jan 1843), William (Jul 1846), John (Apr 1840).

For best results it seems that a combination of rootsireland and ancestry.com works and perhaps you could use the t find out about any marriages for Patrick's siblings.

Happy New Year to you both. Pressures of work I haven't login for a while. I'm still continuing my search for John Walsh for my relatives in Canada. Just to recap on what I do know, he was from Wexford, his father's name was Patrick, he was born 1869/1870, he gave his age as 31 on the 1901 Census, He moved to Dublin probably 1890's. He married twice (that i know of) first time 1894, second time 1912. Both wives predeceased him. 

I'm uploading a photograph I have of his marriage in 1912 in the hope that maybe some person doing research may recognise him.. On the marriage cert he gave his father's name but I'm not sure if it is his father who is in the photograph with him or a brother. I'm assuming John Walsh is the person standing.
