Michael Kavanagh 1845 - 1898 Father

Wexford

Hi,

I am travelling to Ireland/ Dublin and Wexford around the 24 or 25 July 2025 and it would be great if I would meet with someone to assist me with my family tree. My GGF was Owen M (1905-1969), his father was Edward Kavanagh (1878- 1927 NSW),his father was Michael Kavanagh (1845 - 1898 wife (Mary Walsh 1851-1945). We believe his father was Edward Kavanagh (1913) but really not sure.

I'm travelling to Wexford because there are a number of Kavanaghs descendant from their which we believe links to our family tree.

I would greatly appreciate details someone that we could meet with while in Ireland to assist.

Darren

Could this be the marriage of your Michael Kavanagh and Mary Walsh? If yes, his father's name is Daniel.

We have a number of volunteers like Patricia who can assist you with your family tree online on the message board. If you identify a particular location in Wexford we can see if a volunteer is available when you come to Ireland later this month. Possibly your family was from Co. Kilkenny based on the marriage record that Patricia located.

A couple of questions. I looked for Irish death records for Michael Kavanagh in 1898 and Mary Kavanagh in 1945 and did not find a likely lead. Do you have their death records? Did they die in Ireland

You show NSW for Edward Kavanagh. Did Edward emigrate to Australia which means Owen was born In Australia?

Hi Patricia and Roger,

Thankyou for your responses.

Roger - We will be in Wexford town on the 24/25 July and would appreciate meeting with someone that might be available.

I have the death certificate of Michael Kavanagh which lists his wife Mary and father was Edward (profession, baker).I have also found a passenger list for Edward Kavanagh as I mentioned earlier, I am not sure about the Edward connection to my family.

I hope this additional information assists.

Kind Regards

Darren Kavanagh

I've was on vacation for a week and I'm just seeing your message. Not sure we can have someone available in Wexford town the end of next week but please complete this form https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

I will alert our Meet and Greet coordinator.

I searched for a baptismal record for Michael Kavanagh with father Edward and mother Mary. You list 1845 as a year of birth. The closest record I could find was a baptismal record on May 25 1834 for a Michael Kavana with father Edward Kavana and mother Mary Welsh. The RC parish was Borris which is mostly in Co. Carlow and a small part of the parish is in Co. Wexford. There was no townland shown for this baptismal record.

It is possible that your Michael was born earlier than 1845 and this record pertains to him. It is also possible that this record was for a different Michael Kavanagh. Some RC parishes in Wexford do not have records back to 1845.

Darren:

Unfortunately, we don't have a volunteer available for Wexford town next week,

We will continue to assist you here on the message board if you have new information on your family. Other than the record for 1834 that I included with an earlier reply, I don't expect to find any other Michael Kavanagh baptismal records with father Edward.

Have you considered a general DNA test? You may have matches on your Kavanagh line that have information on the origins of your family in Ireland. You are also eligible for a Y-DNA test on your pure paternal line. My experience, having taken that test, is that the Y test goes back a couple hundred years or more and is not that helpful with family research.
