DALY FAMILY - New Ross - Wexford - 1860

Wexford

Hello friends. Is anyone researching the family DALY from New Ross, Wexford?

Denis b1861, wife Catherine nee Dooley b1870, children Catherine Dooley b1888, John Dooley 1891, Mary Daly 1901, Margaret Daly b1903, Maurice Daly 1904, Denis Daly b1905, Patrick Daly b1907, James Daly b1908, William Daly b1910.

I am very confident of the above but I am having problems with the parents of Denis Daly b1861. I know from the marriage certificate of Denis Daly b1861 that his father is listed as Maurice Daly. However I have found two entries for Maurice Daly as a father to Denis. One with a mother as Ellen Barry and one with a mother as Mary Lyons. Does anyone have an other information please? I would be very grateful. Thank you.

The 1901 Irish census shows that John Dooley was a stepchild of Denis Daly, not a son.

Denis and Catherine married in 1896 (see irishgenealogy.ie, civil records). The marriage register says Catherine was a "spinster," but she had two children, Catherine and John Dooley, born several years before 1896.

Transcriptions of baptismal records for Catherine Dooley’s first two children were found at RootsIreland, as follows. The father is called “Unknown Dooley.”  I believe “Status: I” indicates illegitimate.

Note that John was born in 1890 and not 1891. I’m guessing his birth record says 1891? If so, the person registering his birth gave an 1891 date so as not to be fined for not registering the birth on time.

Hi,

Further to what is said by Patricia, whom I think refers to the church records, the Civil records (available freely at irishgenealogy.ie) give further, and sometimes different, information. Catherine was born at the Workhouse in New Ross in 1888. John was born on February 8 1891. I don't know how to explain this difference. It is possible that, for some reason, Catherine gave the wrong date of birth when she was registering the birth. The date of registration of John's birth is 14 June 1891. The address given for John's birth is Irishtown.

Best wishes, Kieran

Kieran,

The conundrum of finding a child baptized before the date on the birth registration is not so uncommon! People had to pay a fine if the birth was not registered within a certain time frame. So they simply lied when registering the birth, giving a date that would not incur a fine. So John's baptism date is accurate and the birth record is not. I hope this helps.
