Murtagh Ann or Anna married to Martin McDonnell around 1800, Westmeath / Roscommon

Westmeath

I am looking for Ann or Anna Murtagh who married Martin McDonnell around 1830 and who had at least one son who was also Martin McDonnell born in Westmeath. Martin senior married to Anna was a storekeeper / Merchant according to the marriage certificate of his son Martin who was a widower and emigrated to Ballarat, Victoria in the 1850s. I would be grateful for any infomation or guidance. Thank you Juanita McDonnell

Juanita,

Per RootsIreland (paid subscription) they also had a son Michael in 1813. Parish did not start recording marriages until 1827.

Thank you MaryTV for your info,

I have seen these records and it confuses me as my 3x great grandfather Martin Junior says he was born to Martin and Anne in 1831 whic is a fair while prior to Michael and Miriam. I am not sure when Martin McDonnell and Anne Murtagh were married as all I have found in terms of records of them is Martin's marriage certificate to Maria Stanford/ Clarke - [attached ], (his first wife my 3x great grandmother Eliza Doyle apparently died in 1854 in Westmeath as did 2 of his children Anna and Martin, his son and my 2xgreat grandfather John survived and must have travelled with him to Australia ) Martin Junior went on to have 6 other children in Australia wih Maria Stanford / Clarke in Castlemaine/ Ballarat, Victoria prior to their marriage in 1875. Martin junior was the clerk and crier of the Supreme Court , Ballarat, Victoria from its inception in 1856 till his retirement in 1886, as recorded in the Government Gazettes of the day. I wonder what employment might have been in Ireland to gain this position in Australia and if there is any way of finding out such things.

So many of the baptisms and marriages of Martin and Eliza (and Maria stanford to John Clarke) took place at St Peter's , Athlone , Roscommon / Westmeath.

Thank you again , Juanita

Have you checked these registries? Martin might have been born earlier than 1831. Look at marriage record. Not unusual for large families to span almost 20 years. Unfortunately, there aren't additional records for children including Martin.
