Mary Whelan

Waterford

Searching for any information on Mary Whelan, my great great grandmother who arrived Australia 1852 as a servant girl. She was daughter of Thomas Whelan, mother unknown, and was born 23/12/1830 at Capperquin, Waterford. She went on to marry a sailor, Robert Perry, born 28/12/1825 son of Arthur John Perry a fishmonger of Great Yarmouth. My wife and I will be visiting Waterford area from 25th August and hope to make any connections or contacts regarding Whelan descendants or their forebears.

As part of your travels I would recommend visiting Dungarvan Harbour, as well as being a very enjoyable town and location in its own sheltered bay it still retains its quayside and bridge which will despite gentrification of the bars and restaurants will still evoke a scene of the ancient dock. From memory the Library is close by and they have various images on their website and a local history section that should help your appreciation of the historical context?

Dungarvan would be the expected contact with the outside world at that time and Ireland was still a coastal nation at that time with sailing ships queinfg to get into port?

Good luck with your planning and enjoy your trip

Ed:

I checked the Cappoquin register for December 23 1830 and Mary is not listed  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632141?locale=en#page/102/mode/1up  and using the subscription site Roots Ireland, I did not find any Mary Whelan baptismal records in Cappoquicn with father Thomas.

Roots Ireland had Mary Whelan baptismal records with father Thomas in Co. Waterford in 1828 1829 1831 1832(2) 1833 but none had a December birthdate. It is unfortunate that you don't know her mother's maiden name.

You may want to consider a general DNA test. Possibly you will have matches that have more info on the origins of the family in Ireland.

Hello, Be sure to search for Phelan as well as Whelan. The names are often used for the same person in the records.
