Looking for an elusive father and his family in Lismore

Waterford

My father, SAMUEL JOSEPH DE CROY, was born in Lismore in 1912/15. Sadly, he appears to have changed his surname to DE CROY and I have been unable to find his original name! His wedding certificate lists an ELIZABETH as his mother and SAMUEL JOSEPH as his father. I have tried for a number of years to dig into his life/history, but can get no further than his wedding certificate. His death certificate records the same surname, DE CROY, but this leads nowhere. A friend found three articles from a Dublin newspaper which fit with some of my father's history, but he uses the name CROY here! I would be grateful if someone could point me in any direction with this.

I went through civil birth records from 1909-1920 in the Lismore registration district and the Waterford registration district with no good leads. Do you have his mother's maiden name? What was his father's occupation?

Max,

If I understand the dates of the article correctly, he was 39 years old in 1945 which would make his birth year closer to 1906.

Also, I did an all Ireland search on the paid site, Roots Ireland, from 1900 to 1910. When I entered the surname De Croy, nothing came up; but when I entered only Croy, the surname came up as McCrory with variants....all in Donegal, Antrim, Armagh, Down, and Tyrone.

The attached marriage record might be a stretch given the year, 1892, and the area - Antrim, but the names work for his parents...you will note that his father was also Samuel.

Regards,

Carolyn

Roger, Carolyn and Patricia,

Thank you all for your assistance.

Whilst the transcription of a Samuel McCrory's Antrim birth record does indeed record his mother as "Alice," the wedding certificate discovered by Carolyn does have "Eliza Jane" as the forenames of Samuel McCrory's wife. "Eliza" is a short version of 'Elizabeth' and, if the dates match, this may match my father's parents.

I have looked at both his wedding certificate and his death certificate for better dating. His death certificate records his birth as 11/11/1912. However, his wedding certificate records him at 40yrs old when getting married in 1957 - this would put his birth in 1917!

His death certificate records "Elizabeth" as his mother and "Samuel" as his father, but gives no details on them beyond that.

His wedding certificate records his father, "Samuel" as being a "Regular RAF Pilot" I could find no record of a "de Croy" in RAF records, which are meticulous, but will look for "McCrory."

Again, my thanks for all you have discovered on this rather elusive character.

Max,

Where was Samuel married and where did he die? Can you post those records that you mention in your query?

Attached is the death record for Eliza Jane McCrory...probably the same one from the marriage record I shared...age is correct. It shows her as widow and farmer...the marriage record had her Samuel as a farmer too. I think this family is probably not yours. The 1917 birth record for Samuel is a better fit. It has been known that folks reporting the parents' names in the death record do make errors. But the fact that his mother is noted as Elizabeth in both his marriage and his death record is hard to argue. I thought maybe Elizabeth and Alice are interchangeable names, but it doesn't seem so....unless she called herself Alice for some reason.

Regards,

Carolyn
