Ancestory of John Kelly

Waterford

John Kelly lived in Kilkenny, Ireland, born c1831 and died in Tasmania in 1885.

On 2nd June 1850, in Henrietta St, Waterford he attacked and stabbed a young man called James Larkin who was badly injured. Kelly was tried in the Waterford Assizes on 11th July 1850, and sentenced for seven years imprisonment. He was held on Spike Island and then transported on 24th November 1852 on the convict ship "Rodney" which arrived in Hobart on 12th February 1853.

I am a descendant and would like to establish the parents and any siblings of John Kelly, my research so far has not been able to establish anything further.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has 12 John Kelly baptismal records for Co. Kilkenny in 1831. There were also 6 1830 records and 8 in 1832. Without more information, it will be very difficult to confirm any of these records

Have you considered a general DNA test? Possibly you will have matches on your Kelly line who have more information on the origins of your family in Ireland.

Hi Roger, Thanks for your response, I had been holidaying in Canada and missed it.

John Kelly's convict record has the following annotation;

S. Catherine. Maria

F Jeremiah    B. Wm.   Hy

From this it would seem that his father was Jeremiah Kelly and he had sisters Catherine and Maria, and a brother William. I am not sure of the accuracy of this annotation.

From my own research I found there was a John Kelly baptised on 18 February 1832 in the Diocese of Lismore and Mocollop, County Waterford, Ireland. The parents were William Kelly and Peggy (Margaret) Hally.

Gulielmus (William) married Margaret Hally in February 1831 in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

I thought this to be more likely his parentage as many of John's children with Caroline Wallington were given the middle name of Hall, presumably in recognition of Peggy Hally.

I haven't thought about a DNA test and am not sure of how to go about it and any privacy concerns. I had thought given John Kelly's criminal record that there may have been some record of family captured. I visited Cohb myself in 2024 but was unable to find anything from records there.

I would appreciate any further comments

Kind Regards

Neville:

I was away on holidays also. I could not locate the 1832 record that you cited.

Ancestry.com has general DNA tests which are not too expensive.
