the Lynch family in Dungarvan, County Waterford

Dungarvan (Waterford)

I’ve been trying to track my husband’s ancestors who might have remained in Ireland. His great grandfather’s sister was Ellen Lynch, born 17 Nov 1868, Dungarvan to Patrick Lynch & Brigid Fitzgerald; baptized 22 Nov 1868 at St. Mary’s Church, Dungarvan. Most of her siblings emigrated in the 1880s. I have found Ellen in the 1901, 1911, and 1926 Ireland census’s, plus have her marriage & death records.

My questions:

Despite the age variations, would you agree this appear to be the same Ellen Lynch/Kiely in each record?

An internet search indicates Youghall and Rices Roads may in fact be the same, along some sections. Do you think any or all of the listed addresses are in fact the same residence?

Any chance you see Ellen’s sibling, John Lynch (baptized 30 Nov 1859) in any records other than the 1901 census?

I think your records matchup despite the fact that Ellen understated her age consistently. Age accuracy was not important until the person was nearing 70 when the individual was sure to get her proof of age/baptismal record. Ellen would have qualified for a pension in 1938. I think it is likely that Ellen stayed in the same residence from her marriage onward.

I found leads for two death records for John Lynch-one in 1908 and the other in 1902. I think the 1908 record is more likely to be Ellen's brother.

Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for taking a look, it is much appreciated.  We are heading to Ireland this summer and I'm frantically trying to fill in some gaps. I was hoping to find someone in the family tree that stayed in Ireland and had families, but it seems I might need to go back another generation, which of course is a slighter greater challenge!  I had known Ellen did not have children, but hoped I'd find that John eventually married and had children himself.  But, I agree with your assessment - that is most likely him in the 1908 death record.

Only a James Lynch, remains to be tracked down.  I have a bit of a conflict with his records. I show him 28 Jan 1856, Dungarvan and baptized 10 Jan 1856, St Mary's Parish, Dungarvan. Parents are Patrick Lynch & Brigid Fitzgerald.  Clearly I have something wrong here, so that is my next project to figure that out!

Thank you again.

Gail

Yes, the actual death records from 1864-1870 have not been added online likely due to staffing issues. You can submit a Meet and Greet form for your visit to the Dungarvan area. https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

Thank you Roger, very helpful.

So, for Ellen & her siblings, I have:

Patrick Joseph Lynch
  • 1857–1942. (immigrated to NYC in 1880s, married Margaret Kennedy also from Dungarvan, children)
John Lynch
Maurice D. Lynch
  • 1863–1931 (immigrated to NYC in 1880s; married a Margaret Lynch from somewhere in Ireland; children)
James Lynch
  • 1866–1869 (appears to have died young in Ireland)
Ellen Lynch
  • 1868–1941 (stayed in Ireland, married a widower, no children)
Brigid Lynch
Mary Lynch
  • 1872–  (not sure - trying to track down Mary)
Thomas Lynch
  • 1874–1944 (immigrated in 1890s to Massachusetts, married/children/widowed to Bridget Lennon, moved to NYC, remarried to Helen Lennon; children)

Almost done with this generation on the Lynch side.  Next is to finish tracking the Kennedy siblings.

Thank you,

Gail

And, I've found Mary's passenger records, arriving in NYC September 8, 1914. Sister in Ireland is identified as Ellen Kiely and brother at 225 East 100th Street is identified as Patrick Lynch. All checks out. Although if I'm lining up the lines properly, there seems to be a stamp "non immigrant alien" next to Mary's name, which makes me wonder if this was just a visit.

GDTrecosta:

Looks like she lived in New Jersey from 1896-1914? Also, fairly tall.
