Ellen Kiely, nee Lynch from Dungarvan, Co. Waterford
I have a dilemma with my research. I've found a tombstone at St. Mary's Parish Church in Dungarvan that matches what I believe to be the death date of my husband's great grand-aunt, Ellen Kiely, nee Lynch; however, the name of her husband (on the tombstone) is not correct.
Would love another set of eyes on this.
What I have:
- Ellen Lynch was born Nov 19, 1868 to Patrick Lynch & Brigid Fitzgerald, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford
- Ellen was baptized Nov 22, 1868 at St. Mary's Parish Church, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford (of Lachthmore)
- there are 8 children in her family (born to Patrick Lynch & Brigid Fitzgerald)
- 2 die young, 4 immigrate in the 1880s & 1890s to USA, Ellen & John remain in Ireland
- her father dies sometime between 1874 (birth of last child) and 1901 (where he is not on the census)
- in the 1901 census she is unmarried and living at 12 Rices Street, Dungarvan with her mother Brigid (widow) and her unmarried brother, John.
- her brother John dies 20 Feb 1908 in Dungarvan
- her mother Brigid dies 25 Jun 1908 in Dungarvan, in the presence of her daughter, Ellen Lynch
- on Aug 30, 1910, Ellen Lynch, spinster, (of Joughal Road, Dungarvan) married widower, John Kiely (of Joughal Road, Dungarvan
- in the 1911 census Ellen Kiely is living at 18 Rices Street, Dungarvan with her husband John Kiely
- in the 1926 census Ellen Kiely is living along on Rices Street, Dungarvan
- On 22 Jun 1941 Ellen Kiely dies on Youghall Street, Dungarvan
I have believed everything above to be correct. Today I found a tombstone in the St. Mary's Parish Church Cemetery, Dungarvan that reads:
ERECTED
BY HIS WIFE & CHILDREN
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
THOMAS KIELY DUNGARVAN
DIED 8th DEC 1906 AGED 68 YRS
HIS WIFE ELLEN KIELY
DIED 22nd JUNE 1941
Something doesn't add up. Her husband was John, not Thomas. And, when she married John, she was a spinster. This Thomas could not be a second husband because the date of Thomas's death pre-dates Ellen's marriage to John when she was a spinster.
Either:
a) I have the wrong death record for my Ellen Kiely
b) I have something else wrong in my research
c) I'm reading the tombstone incorrectly (at different angles it does at first look like 1891 and then the "4" is hard to read, but a few of us present did concur it ultimately looked like 1941) - photo is attached.
d) ????
Any thoughts on this?
Thank you,
Gail
