Power of Ballylaneen

WaterfordBallylaneen (Waterford)

Hi:

I hope you can help me find my Power ancestors. My great grandmother was born in Ballylaneen abt 1865 and died at Ballybrennock in 1916. Her name was Mary Anne Power of Ballylaneen, who married Richard Cullinane (1860-1932) of Ballylegate in 1886. She had 2 brothers that we know of:

1. Canon Martin Power (abt 1849-1924), Parish Priest of Dunhill and Fenor, born in Ballylaneen. He is buried in Dunhill Churchyard.

2. Edmond Power (abt 1860 - ?), Farrier of Ballylaneen. He is buried at St. Anne's Church, Ballylaneen. There is a pink granite tombstone to the right of the front door of the church, that reads:

Erectedby Edmond Power, Ballylaneen

In loving memoryof his fatherRichard Power and motherBridget Power, Aunt Anne, Brothers, Sister, Uncles and Grandparents. The remains of his uncle were the first interred in this cemetery.

Edmond Power, his niece Brigid and Michael and James Brett.

Margaret Lennon nee Brett 1899-1980. R I P

There is also a stained glass window overlooking this grave, that isdedicated to Martin Canon Power, PP of Dunhill and Fenor, died April 1924, whose family is buried just outside the window.

I would like to know more about the Power family of Ballylaneen, when the above Edmond Power died, the names of his brothers (other than Canon Martin Power), Aunt Anne, uncles and grandparents. Who are the Bretts? Edmond Power'ssister, Mary Anne Cullinane, is buried in Dunhill.

Any information is appreciated. I found the information that I have from family stories, Waterford County death register and 1901/1911 Census of Ireland. I guess I really need to look at the Parish Registers for the 1800s, but don't know how to go about it. There was nobody around the church on the 3 occasions that I visited.

Thank you,

Mary Lawton

Mary:

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing has a Richard Powere living in Carrigcastle townland. Likely this is the father of Canon Martin and Edmond.

Roots Ireland which is a subscription site has records for Stradbally RC church (which corresponds to Ballylaneen civil parish) back ro around 1800. It might be worth a one month subscription to look for your Powere records ( Roots has transcriptions of the parish records).

The other alternative is to wait until later this summer when the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. You could look at the Stradbally register at that time.

Hi Mary,

I have just recently read your 2015 post.

I am a decendant of William and Bridget Power, both buried at St.Anne's, Ballylaneen.

They probably have some connection with your Mary Anne Power.

A family group record is attached for your information.

I have read the Will of Edmond Power of Ballylaneen who died on 7th October 1927, having written it on 22nd Aug 1927. It gave rise to the Power charity, which was distributed to the poor of the parish up until around 1970. In the document he also leaves money to the relevant Parish Priest for low masses to be said for his parents, Richard and Mary Power, his Aunt Anne, his brothers Thomas, Michael, Richard, James and Rev Martin Canon Power (PP Dunhill and Fenor), for his sister Catherine Power and also his uncles Thomas and Edmond Power, his grandparents, James and Ellen Power. He left money to his living niece, Kate Power. The latter went to US, married Barron and had no children. There's no mention in the will of a deceased sibling called Mary Anne Power, and in referring to his deceased sister Catherine, he uses the singular. That's intriguing! Edmond Power's newspaper obituary does mention Margaret Cullinan and William Cullinan of Dunhill. I am interested in finding where they fit in. Obituaries of other family members would shed more light and help build up the family tree with accuracy. Edmond's younger brother Michael was my great-great-grandfather.
