James Carr 1807-1897

Tyrone

I am searching for information on my 3rd great grandfather, James J. Carr. and his family. He was born on May 2, 1807 in Arboe, Tyrone. County . His parents were James Carr (1877- ) and Mary Carr (1785-1871). James J. immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early to mid 1830s. He married Eunice (Unity) Duffy in Philadelphia around 1838. Eunice immigrated to Philadelphia in 1836. I believe she was from Donegal. The families were Catholic. I would like to know if James had any brothers or sisters and if they owned land and if they attended a particular church. Any other information would also be helpful. If anyone can help me learn about the Carr's in Ireland, I would be most grateful.

Unfortunately the RC baptism and marriage records for Arboe parish only start in 1827. They didn’t keep records prior to that, so there will probably be no record of James baptism or of any siblings born around the same period.

Griffiths Valuation (1859) lists 3 Carr households in Arboe then. So not a very common name in that area. Philip in Feagh townland; John in Brookend. Both had labourers cottages (and no land). William in Killygonlan had an 11 acre farm. Checked the 1901 Irish census but there were no Carrs farming in Killygonlan then.

There was a John Carr farming in Killycolpy in 1826 but the family had gone by 1859.

There’s a couple of RC churches in the parish but both are fairly modern (built in the 20th century). Not sure if either replaced an earlier building or whether there is another (probably disused) chapel in the parish. I suggest you contact the parish office for information. They will know the parish history.

In the early 1800s there was a Catholic Chapel at Mullanahoe townland just outside Arboe village, across the road from the current church on Mullanahoe Road and adjacent to a graveyard. A modern streetview shows what appears to be ruins at the location of the old church - see screenshot below. Lewis Topographical Dictionary of 1837 also notes that there were also "..two outdoor altars which alternate.."
