I am from Omagh and I could tell you about the Doherty surname in Londonderry/Derry. There is a Protestant Doherty family and a Catholic Doherty family - surname spelt the same - it's how they pronounce it - Dougherty for the Protestants and Dawherty for the Catholics. So it is inaccurate to say the shortened form of Doughherty is Doherty and was used as time went on.
I know this is not the topic, but I noticed that someone said there were Protestant and Catholic Doherty's. We are Protestant here and pronounce as they do. I am from the US and we spell our name totally different from the original or known spelling of Doherty. Our spelling is Dhority. We believe in the 1700's a census worker in the US changed the spelling from Doherty to Dhority. I am having a hard time finding this information as fact though as to the change in spelling. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Donna C. Dhority
