Looking for info on 3rd G Grandfather born in Clogher Tyrone Ireland

Clogher (Tyrone)

I am looking to find a birth record for my 3rd g grandfather Gilbert Dogherty (Dougherty Doherty) and possibly names of parents, siblings and maiden name of his wife. What I know is that he enlisted in the 98th Regiment of Foot at Fivemile Town Clogher Ireland on 11 Jan 1815. He stated he was born in Clogher Tyrone Ireland abt 1791. He was 24 at enlistment date. His occupation was recorded as a Tailor. He appears in the muster rolls at Albany Barracks Isle of Wight from 22 March 1815 to June 3rd 1815. After that I can find no records until he applied for a crown land grant in New Brunswick Canada

The 98th Regiment of Foot was raised in 1804 or 1805 under Colonel John Burk and served some years in Bermuda and New Brunswick. It was garrisoned in Fredericton from 1805 to 1814. It served in the Atlantic region of Canada from 1814 to approximately 1818. In 1815 or 1816 this 98th Foot Regiment was renumbered the 97th Foot (thus replacing the existing 97th Foot which, also in 1815 or 1816, was renumbered 96th).when it was disbanded possibly in Winchester England. In 1816 when the existing 98th Regiment of Foot was renumbered 97th Foot, the 99th (Prince of Wales's Tipperary Regiment) of Foot was renumbered 98th Foot before being disbanded in 1818.

According to the petition for a land grant he immigrated to New Brunswick Canada in 1818. He was a member of the Church of England (Ireland). His wife’s Christian name was Mary. Children born in Ireland were possibly Elizabeth (1814), Robert (1815). Children born while in the service were George (1817) and after he immigrated to New Brunswick John W. (1821), Gilbert (1822), Maria (1827), Phoebe (1829) and James (1835).

I have searched on Ancestry, Family search and I have tried to search some Sites in Ireland without too much success as I am not totally familiar with what exists. Most online records seem to be for periods after his immigration to New Brunswick Canada.  I do purchase the Irish Roots Magazine on a regular basis hoping to learn more about what records exist but so far no luck. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Don,

Clogher Church of Ireland has baptism records starting in 1763, marriages 1777-8, then 1796 onwards, burials 1783 and then 1798 onwards. There’s a copy of those records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are not on-line there and so a personal visit is required to view them. The originals are held in Clogher Cathedral but there is normally a charge to view them. The PRONI copy can be viewed free. I don't think Ancestry or any of the other pay to view sites have digitised these records. PRONI or the Cathedral are the only locations that have them.

Don’t expect too much from a marriage around 1813. All you often get are the couples names, the date and their 2 witnesses. Unlikely to have any parents names.

Thanks,

That was a very quick reply. The marriage info if it contains the wifes maiden name would be helpfull and possibly the witness's names could be family or friends which would help me broaden my search. . I will see if i can find an email for the Clogher Cathedral as any fee is cheaper that a trip to Ireland. I hope to do that in the future when I can nail things down more specifically and gain a greater appreciation of the area. Again thaks for the quick reply.

If the Church of Ireland agrees to look the records up, I think they charge around £19 an hour. But churches here generally get a lot of genealogical requests. More than they can cope with sometimes. Some are quite quick, some fairly slow, and some don’t respond at all.

For professional researchers in Ulster, try the Society of Genealogists:

They’ll look up the PRONI copy if you want.

Thanks,

That is good to know. I have sent an email to the church and asked them what they charge
