Gleeson family in Nenagh

Nenagh (Tipperary)

Hi All. Here's a bit of a needle in a haystack question but my research could have led me to Nenagh.

My Gleeson family so far have been situated around Ballyhaunis and Bekan in County Mayo but digging deeper we have now found a George Gleeson who has Nenagh as his birth place on a Manchester census in 1861. He has a birth date of between 1834 and 37 (it varies per census) but all state Nenagh.

We also have a slight link to a Denis Gleeson born 1782 from Nenagh who emigrated to Australia to a place called Port Fairy? He could be a brother of my 4 x Grandfather Andrew (sometimes called Henry/Henricus) Gleeson. Someone once mentioned that if money was tight, some went over seas and the other members of the family went to England? Not sure if this is true.

Hi Patricia and Margot.

Thank you for your information. I’d found George’s baptism through Ancestry. Now I need to find the connection from his parents to Andrew/Henry! Now I know of Lisbunny, I can head off in that direction.

Again, thank you for all of your help!

Hi. More research has brought a bit more information. Denis Gleeson born 1782 was a "land owner" in Tipperary. I'm assuming that would have been a small parcel of land. He apparently had a fight with a man called James Hayes who died. Denis and his son William Gleeson were deported to Port Maquarie on a ship called The Clyde. Another man called Cornelius "Burke" (not a Gleeson but Denis Gleesons brother in law so I'm assuming his name is Burke as Denis's wife was Mary Burke) was also deported for the crime at Kingstown Harbour, Dublin which doesn't give too many clues. They arrived in Australia in 1838 with his wife and four children landing in 1841.

We have a DNA link to Denis Gleeson. Another connection could be Glenbawn Kilkenny as a potential place of origin?

So I'm searching Denis Gleeson married to Mary Burke who has a brother Cornelius. Denis and Mary have a son William deported in 1837/38. Other children Edmond b 1819, Honora b 1821, Margaret b 1822, Patrick b 1825, William 1808b and to make things just that bit more complicated their son Denis "Junior" b 1822 who married "Mary" and had a son John.

Why did I start this!!!

From a ship list I see............

GLEESON	Edmund 1841	22	Tipp / Tipp	Dennis / Mary	F dead , Mother on this ship detained 9 days in Liverpool Ship =	Livingston

I have saved the original document, are you on Ancestry?  if not you would have to email me if you would like a copy.   I don't know why it was detained in Liverpool.

Tipp / Tipp   this is Tipperary town in County Tipperary,

GLEESON	Honora 1841	20	Tipp / Tipp	Dennis / Mary, M paid own passage	both alive {also Margaret,19}	{prot by Mother=Mary G,& bro Edm	und.} Ship =	Livingston

Looks like a sister Margaret aged 19 was on the ship.

Hi Margot

First of all, please accept my apologies for my late reply. As with many researchers, I have so many websites, Facebook Groups that I try and keep up with! Thank you for all of the information. I used your info to find a link and maybe this could be part of it:

Honora Gleeson born in Nenagh, Mother is Mary Burke which connects to Cornelius Burke who was transported with Denis Gleeson. Now to try and connect the links from her father to Henry/Andrew Gleeson!!

Great results.

Hmmm, I think I've made another mistake! The Honora on the last message wasn't born until 1842, plus wouldn't have been a Gleeson until marrying Denis Gleeson before he was transported. Sorry Margot.

Still some connection at some point I would imagine.
