William Mitchell born about 1854 + James born 1856 North Tipperary Ireland. Their father Henry Mitchell died on an 1858 shipwreck coming to Australia.

Tipperary

Birth & other records of brothers William Mitchell born about 1854 + James born 1856 North Tipperary Ireland.

Their father Henry Mitchell died on an 1858 shipwreck coming to Australia.

Their mother Ellen sent them to relatives in Liverpool England in 1860

Hello,   I’ve learnt that you have some wonderfully helpful people there, so I wish to ask --

Does anyone have any suggestions on the Irish history of my ancestor William Mitchell’s + a

“tragic mystery” of his father Henry who died on an 1858 shipwreck coming to Australia

I’m sending this William Mitchell story in the hope that someone may have suggestions on

-- how to find more about William before 1876 + also William’s parents who married + lived

in 1850s Borrisoleigh Tipperary Ireland + Williams life in 1860s + 1870s in Liverpool England

I’ve read a lot about the 1850s Irish famine + children being sent to Liverpool England, but --

Despite many searches I can’t find anything of William’s life before 1876 in England or Ireland

William Mitchell’s ancestry story has been passed down via my ancestors - William’s father

- Henry Mitchell was born in Ireland in the 1820s + lived at Borrisoleigh Tipperary Ireland.

Henry’s wife was named Ellen ( Nell ) – her maiden name unknown.  They had two sons,

born in Tipperary ( ? ) William Mitchell born about 1854 + James about 1856

In about 1858 Henry Mitchell boarded a ship to Australia, hoping to send for his family later.

The ship  ( of unknown name )  went down + all lives were lost at sea  !!  Ellen later

remarried but nothing more is known about her, or her ex-husband Henry Mitchell.

Any thoughts or suggestions about William + James Mitchell pre 1860s Irish history +

their parents and even their ancestors lives in Ireland before 1850 are very welcome.

***************

Perhaps due to the famine - Ellen couldn’t raise her two young boys, so William Mitchell

age 5 + James Mitchell age 3 - in about 1860 were sent to relatives in Liverpool England

William+ James, uneducated, worked from age ten, for a Liverpool bootmaker in the 1860s

I’m also hoping to learn about William + James Mitchell’s lives in 1860s Liverpool + who

their Liverpool “relatives“ were that the brothers were sent to live with from 1860 to 1876

***************

In the early 1870s, in Manchester -- William met Mary Ann D’Aeth ( Daeth). She was

born 15 6 1856  + later educated at Finedon, Burton Latimer Northamptonshire England.

William was Catholic + Mary Ann was Protestant , so couldn’t marry in England

They migrated from England to Australia – Mary Ann Daeth via ship named

The Jocelyn in 1875 + William via boat named The HMS China in 1876

James Mitchell may have also come to Australia, but nothing more is known of him

Thankyou very much     Mary Sims Mitchell

There are over 100 pubIic famiIy trees on Ancestry for this famiIy. Perhaps some of the posters have information you are Iooking for.  Some of them show a census record with WiIIiam Iiving in a famiIy in EngIand in the time period you mentioned, but that Wm was born in the UK and his father was aIive so it seems to be the wrong one.

glanvil3@aol.com

Have you any information on the ship that he was on in 1858? Such as a newspaper article.

I saw this......

Mitchell   Henry   1855 to Australia   aged 36   Borrisokane   father William and Mother Sarah  ship was Himalaya. He lived in Australia with his wife Bridget and children Sarah and Ann.  He may be a relative.

You say William Mitchell was on the ship  HMS China............ HMS =  His/Her  Majesty's Ship.   I have asked my brother he was in the Navy (not in 1858!)

Margot Secrette

thankyou very much for yoiur responses . It's so refreshing to find someone like you.

I've been told HMS China was an English mail post boat that transported a few paid passengers as well ?

sorry I cant find any information about the ships name when it was wrecked 1858 is an approximate date

can you suggest a local newspaper to search for that information ?.

apparerntly, Llyods of London insured ships at that time but I cant anything specific for that time

I've done so much searching but not found any information

William & James being sent as orphans to live in Liverpool also complicates the history search so much more

I greatly value any more suggestions  ?  Thankyou

humphry333

I asked my brother and no HMS ship was named China, but I have seen China as a name of a ship. This was in 1845/6 going to Australia and it was a convict ship.

There was a Charles Mitchell on board.

Searching through the Baptism records....Terryglass where we saw the Henry Mitchell's name in the Tithe records, Anne Mitchell Baptised to Henry Mitchell and Bridget Carroll. this was in 1848.Top entry

02482/04, Terryglass - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

There was also a Patrick Mitchell he was married to a lady by the surname Stapleton.

You say they went to England in 1860, to Liverpool, did you find any on William and James information there?

Have you done a DNA test in Ancestry?

I have followed a James Mitchell he was in Liverpool in Toxteth. He was an apprentice.

I looked for a death for Ellen Mitchell after 1860.

I really need a bit more information.

Sorry.

I will look in another site.   Cheers Margot

Margot Secrette

Thankyou for your information & suggestions

In reply to your questions –

  1. My cousin has had a DNA test . It shows we are partly from Ireland

Seemed rather vague & inconclusive

  1.   Can you tell me how I can find your apprentice record in Toxleth for James Mitchell ?
  2.  I wish I could find more information for you but the original story is all that I have so far
  3.  Howevver --- There was a boat named the Golden Sea with William Mitchell listed in 1875

Thankyou

humphry333

Ok,

Are you a member of Ancestry world wide version?

The DNA.......  do you know who the person is in the Irish connection or is it % from the pie chart?

This may seen a bit long winded but it does work. Go to your DNA list (or your cousins) and click on matches, then click on filter, go to Parent 1 (this would be whoever is parent 1) click on apply filters.

Copy and paste down to 10 cM's  and save in a word document. Then in the word document delete all your known relatives. Then check each match with the person that is left in the list.

Then do the same on your Parent 2 DNA list.

It works I have done it. No one helped me so I did my DNA and matched to a known relatives DNA list and got my answers.

The William Mitchell aged 22 on the Golden Sea in 1875 did you see the record?  if not there is a Michael aged 11 years with him. ( I have saved the record)

The James Mitchell who was the apprentice, married and stayed in Toxteth.

I will search more.

Margot Secrette

If this marriage is correct to the  Mitchell family above.......................

You say.............

The Jocelyn in 1875

They are from Lincolnshire!
