William Corboy (son of Jeremiah Corboy and Honora Donoghue)

Tipperary

Hi there,

I am looking for more information about William Corboy's parents Jeremiah Corboy and Honora Donoghue.

William Corboy was

  • Born 1838-1840 presumably in Tipperary (NZBDM says age at death was 44 but grave says 42 years)
  • Baptised 6 Feb 1839 in Tipperary (baptism record)
  • Immigrated to New Zealand in 1866 (newspaper article)
  • Married Mary Donovan 31 May 1870 in Onehunga, New Zealand (NZBDM/wedding announcement)
  • Died 4 Dec 1882 Kihikihi, New Zealand (obituary/grave)

I am looking for more information about his parents Jeremiah Corboy (connected the dots through his eldest son's obituary Patrick) and Honora Donoghue (identified through Jeremiah's death certificate).

Jeremiah Corboy

  • Born abt. 1812 in Tipperary (death certificate)
  • Married Honora Donoghue 21 Feb 1832 when he was 19 in Tipperary (marriage record/death certificate)
  • Immigrated to New Zealand abt. 1877 (death certificate says he was in New Zealand 6 years)
  • Died 2 Jun 1883 in Kihikihi, New Zealand (death certificate / obituary)
  • Parents were William Corboy and Mary Ryan

Honora Donoghue

  • Married Jeremiah 21 Feb 1832 in Tipperary (marriage record/Jeremiah's death certificate)

Alanna,

Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie has a record of a marriage ofJeremiah Corby and Honora Donohoe in Terryglass 1832. Witnesses: James Hogan and Lidia Holbert. Parents names not shown.

No record found for the marriage of William Corboy and Mary Ryan, or any siblings for Jeremiah.

Attached Tithe Records for a William Corboy in Ballyscanlan in 1824.

The surnames "Corboy and Corby" are recorded in North Tipperary and a number of marriages for a William Corboy, but none with the spouse as "Mary Ryan".

Regards,

McCoy

Hi McCoy,

Thanks for this. I already had the baptism record for William Corboy and marriage record for Jeremiah and Honora but the rest of the information is new to me.

Based on my research and his death record from NZ, Jeremiah Corboy immigrated to New Zealand about 1877 (shortly after the death of Honora) with his sons Patrick & William. His daughter Mary (Anne) married James Brooder 12 Oct 1865 in Ballyscanlan, Killbarron, Tipperary. They remained in Ireland and on the 1901 census (Brockagh, Kilbarron) she appears widowed with 3 children.

Pat 1833-1900 married Ellen Mary Barry (1836-1930) with 7 children and Will (1839-1882) married Mary Donovan and had 6 children in NZ. They ran a hotel together and (based on their obituaries) were very well respected by the Maori native peoples.

I am attaching Jerry's DR which I believe you already have (lists his parents as William Corboy and Mary Ryan), and the baptismal records of Pat and Mary to get you started on their stories. (you already have William's bapt rec). The Jeremiah above (who died in the workhouse), as far as I can tell, is another individual.

I have more details in my Ancestry tree: "Haley Family Tree" which is public. Search on Honora Donoghue as there is more than one Jeremiah Corboy in the tree. I am actively working on the Corboys in general and right now it is a mess, so ignore all the rest, but I have this particular line fairly well verified.

My family is connected to the Corboys through a marriage likely to a Hoctor or a Corrigan. I Have DNA evidence just trying to tie in the paper trail. If anyone researching the Corboy family (esp near Borrisokane or Terryglass) and comes across this connection, please contact me at nwsulik@yahoo.com ? Thank you.
