Thomas McGrath and Catherine Riordan - County Tipperary

Tipperary

Hello,

I am looking for more information on my ancestors Thomas McGrath and Catherine Riordan (also have seen it spelled Catherina Reardan). From the family history that I have, Thomas was born around 1800 and Catherine about 1802. I believe they were married in Sologhead on October 13,1823 based on the document I have attached. Son Dennis was born on February 3, 1825 and son Jeremiah was born in November, 1828. They emigrated to Canada in 1830. They were Catholic.

I am going to be in Ireland in September, 2025 and would like to know where they lived (like a family farm) so that I can visit it. And if there is any other information on Thomas and Catherine's relatives/ancestors, I would appreciate that information also.

Thank you so much!

Hi, The couple married in the Catholic parish of "Solohead and Oola." But the church they married in and the townland they lived in may not have been Solohead.

On the subscription site FindMyPast.ie I located an October 21st 1828 baptismal record for a Jerry Magrath with father Thomas and mother Kitty Reddan. The RC parish was Cappawhite and the family was living in Monavane which I believe is the townland of Moanvaun in Toem civil parish. I think Reddan is close enough to Riordan/Reardon.

Hello Kae!

I am also looking for more info on Thomas McGrath & Catherine Riordan.  I stumbled upon this post while searching and wanted to reply!  Thomas & Catherine's son Jeremiah is my Great Great Grandfather, his son John Thomas Francis McGrath was the father of my Grandmother Mary Veronica McGrath McGinn.  I am the youngest child and only daughter of Mary's son James Edward McGinn.  Coincidently, my husband and I will also be in Ireland in September 2025. I have been told by my father that when he and some other family members were in Ireland in 2011, they visited St Nicholas Church, Parish of Solohead, Co Tipperary, Ireland where Catherine & Thomas were married in 1823. From what I can tell, the current church was built in 1880, so I think that the church Catherine & Thomas were married in is no longer standing.  But, there is supposedly a cemetery there with graves dating back to the late 1700's. I hope this helps and good luck with your continued search!!

Hi Tara!

Thanks for the information about St Nicholas Church. We'll have to stop by there when we are in Ireland.

My ancestor is Dennis McGrath who is Jeremiah's brother. Dennis is my 2nd great grandfather. His son, Warren McGrath is my great grandfather and his daughter Mabel McGrath Larson is my grandmother. Her only daughter Avis Larson Johnson is my mom. I have a tree in Ancestry.com and I have your grandmother Mary Veronica in it but I have her son as Edward James. Guess I have his name backwards...

We will be in Ireland from Sept 7th to Sept 29th. We will be in Tipperary on Sept 14th. If you are in Ireland during that time, it would be fun to meet up and compare notes!
