Thomas Dwyer

Hi,
This is from a ships list
DWYER Thomas 1840 23 (Tipp) Michael / Margaret xx Father = a farmer. Known in Kilmore. Ship = Alfred
Did the brothers stay in Ireland?
Margot

Hi Margot and Eamonn,

Thank you both for your help, much appreciated !

I think his brothers came to Australia as well, but cannot be 100% on that.

Any other information or suggestions would be great!

Pete D

Eamonn,

Thank you so much for your effort and information.

I don't think Thomas' parents emigrated to Australia, I have not seem any records of them here.

I have tried the genealogy centre last year when I was in Tipperary and came up a blank. Maybe the names given on his death certificate are wrong, who knows!

I will keep looking and see what I can find.

Thanks again,

Pete D

Hi folks, my GGrandfather, Thomas Dwyer, migrated to Australia (possibly to Melbourne - Port Philip back then) some time between 1845 and 1869. Thomas married Bridget Comerford on Saturday 28 October 1871. I have not been able to locate the name of the vessel on which he and/or Bridget arrived ... but still looking!

"My" Thomas is not the same Thomas as Pete's but I bet they are related somewhere along the (paternal) line. Thomas is buried in Melb. Gen'l Cemetery. He died in 1929. Both he and Bridget were born in Co. Tipperary, ... where and when I have yet to find out.

Anyway, just thought I'd let Pete know he and I are investigating "The Family"! There are Dwyer people spread right up and down the East Coast of Oz. There are hundreds of 'em.

Regards, Bryan

Hi Bryan,
These are the Thomas Dwyer's that came from Tipperary......you may recognise one!
If you do then please say which one and then I will seach more.
Bridget Cumerford  if after 1865 I would search in another site.
Cheers
Margot

Peter, did you do your DNA with Family Tree Jan 31, 2019?  The O'Dwyer Clan has a DNA group on which there is a Peter Dwyer with a distance of 3 from my husband Terry Dwyer.  His oldest ancestor is Daniel Dwyer b. 1805 Tipp. & emigrated to Canada in 1839.  Marilyn

Hi Bryan,

Many thanks for you post!

Yeah it would be good to share the family trees to see if there is a link. There are a few people on my Y-DNA who live in AU. Patrick Dwyer from Bathurst is a 3rd cousin. My GGGrandfather had I think from memory 7 children William, Michael, Thomas, Patrick, Mary (who died), Mary and Margaret. All born in the Western district of Victoria. My GG Grandfather then moved to Gippsland as he worked on the railways.

Have you done a DNA test?

Pete Dwyer

Hi Marilyn,

Yeah, that's me!

I am not sure how Daniel Dwyer is related to me, maybe a brother of my GGGrandfather (Michael) or GG Grandfather (Thomas), according to my Thomas' death certificate his father's name was Michael. Thomas' DOB was listed as 1816 which fits with everything else I have on him. Daniel has a DOB 1805, so 11 years difference maybe a brother, what are your thoughts?

I have been unable to find much information regarding Michael and his wife in Ireland, other than Thomas has listed Cashel Tipperary as his point of origin prior to his emigration to Australia in 1840.

My other closest relation in Ireland is Padraig O'Duibuir who I have spoken with and he did mention Daniel as a relative as well.

Has Terry done a family tree?

Sorry not much to go on!

Pete Dwyer

Hello Peter ,  The Dwyer connection in my family came from my father's side and settled in Ipswich Qld.  I have a Mary Dwyer, who was married to a Richard Dalton in Knockavilla Tipp.  .  MOther; of Mary is litsted as Judith Dwyer of Knockavilla ( Cashel).   My Dwyers emigrated in 1862 on the " Theresa" from  Cashel area ( Knockavilla). The passenger list has  Judith 54 ( husband may have died or remained in  Tipp. ) There are  listed a Mary 44 possibly married to Patrick 45  on that same ship. Also same ship , a John Dwyer 38 possibly Patrick's brother. My link is with Mary Dwyer having come out to Ipswich earler than her mother and brothers due to her becoming a widow with a small child in Knockavilla. The child she left behind,  Patrick Dalton 7 years was left behind in care of Grnandma and family...he is on the same ship as this family who have cared for him till mother ( Mary became settled ) in Aust.

He is listed as Patrick Dalton 7 years old  on the Theresea with his Grandma and uncles and Aunts. There is also a Michael Dwyer 20 , Timothy Dwyer 24 , Bridget  21 and a John 24 years on the Thereses this same family group. I have treace some of them to IPswich where Judioth settled with  Patrick  and his mother Mary Dwyer married again to a Patrick Gee.This is probably a branch....so many Dwyers.

Di Fitzgerald.

Replying to your post Jan 11 Peter, I have posted Daniel Dwyer's information on Ireland XO under "Ancestors of Boherlahan-Dualla Tipperary".  Cashel is very close to Boherlahan-Dualla.  Daniel's first born son is Michael, born 1838 in Ireland & first born daughter Margaret, born 1841 Canada.  If you wish, contact me (mcdtreeline@gmail.com)

Hi Peter,

My 3 x great grandfather was Patrick Dwyer, who married Catherine Cummins in Boherlahan, Tipperary in January 31 1831.

Not sure, but there may be a connection to your Thomas Dwyer.

I can't find Patrick's birth record as yet so not sure who his parents were - still looking.

Their daughter, Anne Dwyer (my 2 x great grandmother) left Ireland in the early 1860's and married my 2 x great grandfather Willaim Lanigan in Jericho Victoria, April 6 1863.

The settled in Upper Maffra in the late 1870's.

Hi Lano,

Has anyone in your family completed a YDNA test?

It would seem that if not brothers, may be cousins as they seem to originated in the same area of Tipperary.

Pete D

Hi Di,

I am trying to crack the parents and brother/sister part in Ireland, I think that once we do that it will become a lot clearer as to who and how people are related. Any information that you may have regarding pre Australia that you think will be helpful please send through.

If I find anything out I am happy to share it with you.

Pete Dwyer

Hi Pete,

I have had my DNA done through My Heritage (Lanigan Family Tree website) and Ancestry (username lano1702).

I haven't had any hits with any other Dwyers, or other Irish descendents of my Lanigans, Kellehers (Kerry) or Mahoneys (Limerick).

My Lanigan ancestry is from Tipperary, and not that far away from the Dwyers.

I would hope one day to find the links to other descendents from these othe family groups.

Regards,

Stephen.

Lano3710....I found a Baptism on the NLI parish registers for Boherlahan-Dualla, which MAY be a possiblity for your Patrick, making him about 20 when he married in 1829

24 Feb 1811 Patrick of John & Honora Dwyer;  Sponsors:  John Common & Patrick Pendergast

[Cummins/Common interchangeable in some records]

Patrick Dwyer & Catherine Commons/Cummins also had a son William Dwyer, bapt. 1 Mar 1832, Boherlahan-Dualla

Our Daniel Dwyer (1805-1882) & Mary Hackett had a son Michael baptized in 1838 & his sponsors were Michael Cummins & Catherine Lube/Lubey/Looby

Marilyn

I have both Dwyer and Healey in my tree.  When I really start to dig in I will come back to this post

Thanks Marilyn, I will check it out.

Stephen (Lano3710)

Hi Marilyn,

I forgot to add, William Dwyer, is my 2 x great grandmother, Anne Dwyers older brother.

Anne was born in 1838.

Other siblings are:

Stephen Dwyer born 1834;

Bridget Dwyer born 1843.

Bridget also emigrated to Victoria and married Thomas Gaffney in 1863 in Jordan, Victoria, which was a small gold field town in hills above Gippsland, around Aberfeldy and the now Thomson Dam.

Regards,

Stephen Lanigan

Hi Margot,

unfortunately none of the TD's fior which you provided details, is my GGrandfather. 'My' TD was married on 28 Oct 1871 in Melb and TD's age given on his m. cert. is 23 yrs (Bridget's is given as 22 yrs). Assuming they did not lie on their m. cert. (which, in my opinion, wld be a bad start to their marriage...!) by claculation TD was born in 1848 (Bridgte in 1849). T&B Dwyer produced 10 children: 6 daughters, 4 sons, between 24 July 1870 and 5 May 1887 (a space of 17 years). Poor Bridget passed away at the earliy age of 39 yrs, a couple of yrs after the birth of her last child (my grandfather) on 24 Dec 1889.

Hi Pete,

yes I had a YDNA test done thru' FTDNA. I've tested at 12, 25, 37, 67 and 111 levels. But I have no idea what the results mean! I don't belive very many people in Oz are 'into' the 'DNA space'.

Regards, Bryan

Hello.

I am also looking for a Thomas Dwyer. Born in Ireland in 1821, by 1861 he was living in Stourbridge with his wife Rose Hannah. Rose was also born in Ireland in 1831.

I would appreciate any help you could give me to track down Thomas and Rose's births or marriage.

Update...sorry I'm a newbie here so couldn't work out how to edit my post above.

As far as Rose is concerned, I don't have her maiden name. I just found her and Thomas (Dywire!) in the 1861 England census.

Kind regards

Peter Cutter

Hi, I am also researching Dwyers who came to Australia. I have been researching the Dwyers from Tipperary, mainly around Shronell, but recently started looking at the Dwyers around Clonoulty Tipperary too.  John Dwyer is an Australia and obviously a Dwyer descendant, he decided to create a Facebook group so Dwyers in Australia (and around the world) can come and explore their family trees together.  Sharing info, asking questions and working out the stubborn mysteries we have in our family history research.  We would love you to join, hopefully someone will have the answers you are looking for, or can help you find them... and who knows... you may find some new cousins ;)

The Facebook group is called  Condon/Dwyer's of Australia Genealogical Project.  Please come and join, chat about the Dwyers and ask questions so we can work on the puzzles together.

Condon/Dwyer's of Australia Genealogical Project

Hope to see you soon :)

Lilly mentioned me in her post so let me introduce myself and offer some information.

I am John Dwyer, great great grandson of William Dwyer from Shronell, Tipperary. William was born in 1817 and emigrated to Victoria with his younger brother Mathew in 1841. Their sister Bridget followed with her husband John Glasheen and their children in 1849 and an older brother Jeremiah followed in 1850. Parents were Mathew Dwyer or O'Dwyer and Frances "Fanny" Condon from Shronell.

I started the Facebook group Lilly mentioned as a way to explore linkages between the Dwyer and Condon families in Australia and their homelands in Ireland. There are a lot of family clusters in towns and cities throughout Australia with easily traceable lines of accent back to the free settler or convict who arrived in the Colonial era. I focus on the period from the First Fleet in 1788 to the Federation of Australia in 1901. Family stem lines usually come from a new members enquires or from a choice of individual or locality. The small town in which I live has a very tight Dwyer history started by a boy who was allowed to accompany his convict mother to the colony. Another town in NSW was selected due to the cluster of Dwyer's there, but I found I had a relationship to them through marriage to my Condon family.

The group is interested in any Dwyer's or Condon's in any state in Australia and New Zealand. We are only a few months old, very small at the moment, but we have a great research team who will tackle any question or call for help.

See Lilly's post for links, and yes, please come and check us out.

John
