Ryan / O'Ryan family of Cashel, Tipperary pre-1850

Tipperary

Hello,

I am researching:

[Theresa] Winifred Ryan / O'Ryan (c.1832-1878)

and

Johannah Ryan / O'Ryan (c.1834-?) who arrived in Sydney, Australia per John Knox 29 April 1850 as Irish Orphan Girls under the Earl Grey Scheme. The Ryan sisters were selected from the Cashel workhouse.

Their immigration documents say that their native place is Cashel, Tipperary. Their father, John, is marked as deceased and their mother, Bridget, was still living at Cashel. I understand from Winifred's (married name Carey) death certificate that their father, John Ryan, was a farmer.

Their mother, Bridget (c.1805-?, maiden name unknown, parents names Johannah and Jeremiah), and their brother, Jeremiah (c.1836-1911), arrived in Sydney in 1857 per Admiral Lyons. The remittance was paid by John Lawless, Johannah's husband.

Winifred married Andrew Carey in 1851.

Johannah married John Lawless in 1854.

Jeremiah, who became a Catholic lay teacher, was known later as Jeremiah Joseph O'Ryan. He married Mary Devereaux from Cappawhite in 1871 in Cooma, (country New South Wales).

Winifred, Johannah, Bridget and Jeremiah all emigrated as Ryan. 'O'Ryan' is used on some but not all of the sisters' Australian documents as their maiden name.

I have not yet found any vital records in Ireland.

I have checked the Cashel workhouse books on the Tipperary Studies site.

I am wondering if there were farms in Cashel itself or if I should be looking for another townland. I have searched on Roots Ireland and not found any vital records that match. I have a list of townlands of places that were in the catchment area for the Cashel PLU, but am not sure if they are complete.

I am considering a visit to Ireland for research in the middle of the year but nothing confirmed as yet.

Thank you,

Kathleen Hackett

Kathleen:

It is possible that your Ryan family came from the town of Cashel but immigrants would identify with the largest nearby town when they arrived in their new country. So your Ryans could have been from a townland that was ten miles from Cashel. The other issue is that you don't have the maiden name for Bridget.

Cashel RC records are not included in the Roots Ireland data base but are included on FindMyPast.ie I searched that data base but could not find a Ryan family with Jeremiah/Winifred/Johanna baptismal records with father John and mother Bridget.

FYI civil records for births do not start until 1864.
