Pullehea(?) County Tipperary

Tipperary

I found an obituary for my great grandfather, Patrick J. Walsh, who died in 1910 in Chicago, IL. It states he was a "native of Pullehea County Tipperary." This location didn't show up in a Google search. Do any of you know if this is an actual place? I believe he was born sometime between 1853 and 1860. Thank you in advance for any help.

Anne,

Sometimes it is helpful to work back. Who were his wife and children? Any dates and where- marriage and births. Or any other info would be helpful. Do you know where he is buried. Can you copy the obituary?

Regards- Mary

Hello Mary,

I have attached a copy of the obituary. Patrick immigrated to the US around 1873 and settled in Chicago. He married Margaret Anderson in 1880. Their children were: Mary Walsh Gebhardt, Nellie Walsh, Margaret Walsh, Kathryn Walsh, James Francis Walsh, Rosella Walsh Grace (my grandmother) and Geraldine Walsh Lyman. All were born in Chicago between 1881 and 1894. For years I think I was chasing the wrong Walsh line through Ballycullane until this obituary popped up showing Pullehea County Tipperary.

@@@@@@

Per RootsIreland there was an Ellen Walsh born to James Walsh and Mary Davis in  Ballyneale, Waterford which is close to Tipperary.  Something to further research.

Yes...I have seen those records and I use to think that the Patrick from Ballycullane was MY Patrick until I saw the obituary (plus a few other verbal histories involving Tipperary, not Wexford. So what I am trying to determine is if there is/was a place called Pullehea in Tipperary or perhaps someplace with a similar name and perhaps the obituary had a misspelling.

Thank you,

Anne

I wonder if the death notice recorded the place incorrectly as there is a place called Tullohea in Tipperary

Tullohea is in the Electoral Division of Kilcash, in Civil Parish of Garrangibbon, in the Barony of Iffa and Offa East, in the County of Tipperary

Ann,

There was a Tullohea, Tipperary. In 1911 there were Walshes living there. It is in Gambonsfield and Kilcash Catholic Parish which is next to Ballyneale. Depending on the record Ballyneale is identified in Tipperary and Waterford. Since Ellen's (1848) was a baptismal, Waterford is on the record because they were in the Waterford and Lismore Parish. I did not find a record for Patrick but the family might have moved to Tullohea. Was the death record with James Walsh and Mary Davis the correct one? I did not find those two names together anywhere in Ireland on RootsIreland other than Ellen's baptism.

You have given me great information! I believe the death record you gave me listing James Walsh and Mary Davis as Patrick's parents is correct. So the records you found for Ellen born in Ballyneale to James Walsh and Mary Davis is a great clue. I'm wondering if you could attach a copy of that record or lead me to where I can find it.

So now I am wondering if Pullehea is actually Tullohea which you said was near to Ballyneale.

Thank you so much for your time and effort.

Anne
