Mary (Agnes) Murphy (great-grandmother) from Foilnaman, Tipperary

Tipperary

Hi, this is a bit of a long shot, I know… My great-grandmother on my mother’s side, Mary Agnes Murphy, was born in Tipperary around 1889, (My mother says she always said ‘Nenagh’, but I know now that covers a much wider area than the actual town of Nenagh) to Patrick Murphy (farmer, deceased by 1918) and Margaret. She moved to England sometime between 1911 and 1918, as she married her first husband, James Smith from County Mayo, in 1918 in Yorkshire. Margaret Murphy, her mother was living with her in England, definitely by 1921, but could well have come over with her. (Mary Agnes states ‘Patrick Murphy’ as her father, but interestingly, when I got Margaret Murphy’s death certificate, it said ‘widow to James Murphy, farmer’ – It could be that the wrong info was given, or that maybe her husband was ‘James Patrick, or Patrick James’?) I can trace Mary Agnes and her mother in England through the census as well as family photos, oral history and death certificate, etc. but her Irish life was always a bit of a mystery – only because no one seemed to talk about it. Mary Agnes married again after the death of her first husband (he died 1923, and she re-married in 1927), and my Grandfather was born to her and her second husband.

My mother has some photos from my grandfather’s half-sister, Winifred, when she died, of who she said were family members, as well as a newspaper clipping that my grandfather had given to her showing the death of a Patrick Murphy (Died 1920, with his brother, William, present at death) from Ballycarn, Curreeny, who my grandfather had always said was an uncle.

I contacted the extremely helpful Local History centre in Nenagh and they located the newspaper from the clipping (Nenagh Guardian) as well as the family from the census and the registration of death for Patrick Murphy.

Through Ancestry, I reached out to a lovely man in Australia, who is very knowledgeable about Irish history, whose grandmother was a daughter of the Ballycarn, Curreeny Murphy family. One of the photos my mother has, had ‘Patrick Murphy’ written on the back, and I had (wrongly) assumed that this was the person my grandfather said was his uncle, however, from a recent conversation with my mother, it turns out he hadn’t seen the photos, as was referring to Patrick Murphy’s father, also Patrick Murphy, who’s death was in the newspaper clipping.

(Apologies for the rambling nature of this!)

Through e-mails and a phone call, it turns out that the Ballycarn, Curreeny Murphy family file did have a photo of my great-grandmother, Mary Agnes, and there was a reference to her being a ‘cousin’, although how she was related wasn’t known.

The man from Australia, had contacted some very knowledgeable and helpful friends of his in Tipperary who research family history, and looking at all the information, thought that a Murphy family in Foilnaman was a likely match for my great-grandmother. (Some of the dates didn’t quite add up, but since looking at several of Mary Agnes documents, her date of birth etc. changes from one event to the next!)

The Foilnaman Murphys were: (I found birth and marriage certificates for most of these)

Mother and Father: Patrick Murphy Born around 1848 (father Patrick Murphy) Married 1876 Died between 1889 and 1901 – possibly 1892

Margaret Murphy (nee Ryan) (Father John Ryan, Farmer – Mother possibly Margaret) Born around 1855 in Cloneyharp, Married 1876

Children

Winifred Murphy – born 1877 (Married name Quinlan)

Margaret Mary Murphy – born 1878 (Married name Quirke – I have been in touch with relatives of Margaret Mary in USA, although they didn’t have further info, it was great to be in touch!)

Catherine (Katie) Murphy – born 1880 (Unmarried and living with her mother in 1911)

Anastasia (Annie) Murphy – born 1882 (not listed as living with Margaret in 1911, but haven’t found a marriage or death certificate for her either)

Patrick Murphy – born 1884 (Unmarried and living with his mother in 1911)

Bridget Murphy – born 1885 (not listed as living with Margaret in 1911, but haven’t found a marriage or death certificate for her either)

John Murphy – born (Unmarried and living with his mother in 1911)

‘Minnie’ Murphy (I was told that ‘Minnie’ was ‘Mary’) - Born 1889, was living with her mother in the 1901 census and staying with her sister, Margaret Mary Quirke in 1911 census.

What I’d really like to know, is whist this is a very likely match, is there any way of finding out if this is the actual family for my great-grandmother – any way of knowing if Margaret and Mary (possibly others) came to England? (The 1926 census might shed more light, I suppose) and how Mary Agnes or her mother, Margaret, or father, Patrick, was related to Patrick Murphy Senior from Ballycarn, Cureeney? Might Foilnaman Patrick Murphy’s father, (also Patrick Murphy) have been a cousin to Patrick Murphy of Curreeny? Do records go back that far?

I feel as though I’m so near but am still missing that final piece in the jigsaw! Various family members have been searching for years, including May Agnes’ son, Michael Smith and his wife, Charlotte (both deceased), who, according to oral family history, went over to Ireland (possibly in  the late 70s/80’s) and met with some relatives, but because of a fall out, didn’t tell anyone who they met with! – So frustrating! I hope to visit myself at some point, and would love to see where my Irish family came from!

Thank you for reading (sorry it was long!) – Any leads (however vague!) would be most welcome!

Kind regards,

Tara

Hi,

If family was from Foilnaman, Borrisoleigh, (Upperchurch), this is probably Patrick's death record. Click on 'view record image'. Found on Irishgenealogy Irish Genealogy - Explore your Family History

I should note that your above message suggest he is 44. Maybe this is his father??

Hi, MaryTV,

Thank you, yes, I had seen this, and it was suggested to me by the people in Ireland that it could well be Patrick's death record, even though the age is out, especially as 'Margaret' is given as his wife, present at death.  - The errors in people's ages was something that really surprised me, as I said, when looking through a whole range of Mary Agnes' documents, her age is rarely the same! And when looking at the census, it amazed me how some people aged 20 years in a 10 year period, whilst others lost a few!

Irish Genealogy has been an amazing site - I have found so many certificates, (birth, death and marriage) for the Foilnaman Murphy family  - there's something quite special in seeing documents from the past. I just really hope to find out for certain if it is Mary Agnes' family for sure, and how she was related to the Murphys in Ballycarn, Dolla.

Thanks again, really appreciate your message.

Kind regards,

Tara
