Maher family from Tipperary

Tipperary

I am looking for any information on my Maher ancestors. My 2 x great grandfather James Maher was baptized in June 1836 in Templemore parish. His parents were Patrick Maher and Catherine Dempsey.

He came to Australia before 1872 as he is documented to be leasing a homestead and land in 1872. He also married in 1874.

His Australian death records state also that Patrick Maher and Catherine Dempsey are his parents.

I would be interested in any information regarding Patrick and Catherine.

My mother and myself have DNA through Ancestry and have a few matches in the USA and Australia. Some of their ancestors also come from Tipperary but I haven't been able to connect us so far.

I would appreciate any tips.

Lesa,

James was born in Shanakill, Templemore. He had two sisters recorded- Johanna 1830 and Mary 1832. Patrick and Catherine were married in 1828 in Templemore. Catherine was from Shanakill.

Thankyou for your help I really appreciate it.

If I go to rootsireland will I be able to download the marriage record?

I also found in the parish records at Templemore a Denis Maher bapt 1833 son of Pat Maher and Catherine Maher. I'm wondering if that is another child of theirs.

Lesa,

RootsIreland would not provide an official record. It just provides the recap Patricia shared. Unfortunately, marriage records for 1828 are not included in the Templemore church registry.

Templemore, Cashel and Emly - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

The Denis you identified is not James' brother. He was born on Mary St. and came from a large family. There is a marriage record for Patrick Maher and Catherine Maher of Mary St. They were married in Templemore in 1832.

Regards- Mary

Thankyou I will discard Denis.

I have subscribed to rootsireland and have done some digging there. Also have been through the parish registers for Templemore looking for more possible siblings of James.

I have looked in the parish registers for the few years between Mary and James, also after James in 1836 but I didn't find anything.

Would there be any point looking in some other Parish records?

I will start looking for marriage records for Mary and Johanna but will appreciate any tips .
