Clifford

Tipperary

GreatGreatGreat Grandmother Honora Clifford was born about 1792 -1793. According to her Canadian gravestone she died April 20, 1864, at 71 years.).

I do not know her parents nor siblings but am looking for them. I also do not know when she arrived in Canada. How might I find out about her parents and when she came to Canada?

She was married twice, both times in Canada. Her first marriage was on May 08, 1815. She had two children from that marriage. Then on October 01,1819 she married again. She had seven more children with her second husband. According her 1819 marriage record she was from Kilcash in County Tipperary.   Present at that marriage as a witness was a Catherine Clifford.  I want to know more about her.---- might she have been a sister?

I looked at the National Library of Ireland, but I think the births did not go back to 1792/3.as I recall. I think Kilcash is a townland  or maybe a civil parish. What is your guess? Whatever it is she said that was her former residence.

I found some valuation office books 1824-1856 with three Clifford names ( Tobias, James, Tobin ) . They were from the parish Kilcash and townland Toor. Is Toor far from Kilcash ?

I did not copy the Tithe Applotment Book info because the two Cliffords I found were from Toor and not Kilcash.

Can you give me some ideas of where to go next in the Clifford dilemma?

Thank you

Kilcash is a townland/village and a civil parish. The civil parish of Kilcash is very small only eight townlands. Both Toor and Kilcash were large townlands within the civil parish. Both townlands were just over 1000 acres in size. The RC parish for the area would be Kilsheelan. Baptismal records for the parish start in 1840. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1108?locale=en

I located 1834 Tithe listings in Toor for a Thomas Clifford and a Tobias Clifford. https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587456/004587456_00113.pdf Possibly they were brothers to Honora.

Hi, Can you provide her married names and names of her children?

 Hello and thank you  ----

Regarding the Kilcash Honora was referring to in her marriage certificate, it being both a townland and a civil parish, have I now found her townland --- is that yes  or  no  ?   So, family might live in Toor because Toure and Kilcash are part of the same civil parish .  .

Her first marriage was to William Higgins . He was from the parish of Slieverue in Co. Kilkenny according to the marriage record.. Seems they met in Newfoundland. John the first son I have info on. The second son was William  . I suspect her husband and second son died, but I have no proof . Can't find records on either of them.

Now the second marriage was to Thomas Murphy who was born 1778. He was from Enniscorthy in Co. Wexford according to the St. Johns, Newfoundland  marriage certificate. Their children were Catherine  b 1821, Pierce b 1822-25 in Newfoundland, Patrick ,Michael born 1828 on Prince Edward Island , Mary, Ellen, Joanna.... all born between 1821 and 1834.  John Higgens , her son with  Wm.Higgens ,  was also listed  as a first child ( being born in 1816).and  was given the name Murphy. I guess Thomas adopted John, but I have not looked to see if that was done back then. He was according to family history a half-brother to the 7 children of Thomas and Honora. Sometime between 1823 and 1827 they moved to PEI , Canada.

Anyone  have ideas where I might search  to find about Honora"s parents or other relatives in Ireland?

The NLI parish register gives  no parents ' names in the marriage data. How do I find the church where someone was married and would the church have the names of parents ?

RC marriage records in Ireland rarely showed parent's names.Civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864 and those records showed the fathers name. I don't know the practice of Catholic churches in Canada.

There are no RC church records available in Kilsheelan back to the late 1700s. The earliest Clifford records I can find are the Tithe records from 1834.
