Catherine Keating
I'm wondering if anybody can decipher the name of the Tipperary parish hand written in this extract from an Australian birth certificate? My great-grandmother was Catherine Keating who came to Australia from Tipperary in 1860 at around the age of 20. She arrived on the Empress of the Sea. There was also a Thomas Keating on board aged 18 who may have been a brother. She certainly had a brother James who was in Australia by the 1870s, possibly earlier.
She married my great-grandfather, William Moore, (from Doon, just inside Co Limerick) in 1862. Her marriage certificate shows her father as James Keating and mother Anne. However, when she died in 1928 her father was recorded as William. A very knowledgeable aunt aunt who would have been in her 20s at the time told me they had no idea which part of Ireland we had come from, suggesting very little knowledge had been passed on. I think it's more likely that James is correct.
I've had no luck in the past determining where she came from but recently I obtained the birth certificates of her children to track where they lived during the early years of their marriage. In this entry she provided the name of her parish in Tipperary. She wasn't literate (signed the marriage certificate and later documents with a cross), so it's possible the parish name as written could have been an interpretation by the clerk and she would not have known what he was writing.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.
