Thomas Ryan and Bridget Hennessey of Holycross

Holycross (Tipperary)

I am trying to trace a couple Thomas Ryan and Bridget Hennessey. I have 3 daughters of this couple who were found living in Halifax , Nova Scotia. Catherine born about 1840 , Ann born about 1841 and Winifred born about 1844. Catherine married Patrick Leahy in 1868 Halifax, Ann married John Lawrence Maokler in 1862 Halifax and Winifred married William Rawley in 1871 Halifax.

The marriages of all 3 state they are of Holy Cross, Tipperary.

They had an Aunt also living in Halifax , Ellen Ryan who was married to James Connolly in Ballycahill and Holycross in 1836.

I have not been able to find the parents or the birth records of these 3 sisters.

Erin,

Per RootsIreland (paid subscription), a Thomas Ryan of Holycross married Bridget Hennessey of Ivyhall in Templemore, Tipperary on March 3, 1829.

I did not find their daughters but found a James Ryan born June 17, 1832 in Upperchurch, Tipperary to Thomas Ryan and Bridget Hennessey

Hello Mary,

Can you tell me which Parish the marriiage was recorded in ? Does Rootsireland have images of the original record? Holycross registers on NLI start after 1829 so am wondering where this marriage took place. The James Ryan original record I found and it could ne Kennedy not Hennessey ( really poor image).

Thanks again Erin

Erin,

I am not sure where RootsIreland found the record. Unfortunately, the Templemore parish records do not include 1829 marriage records. I agree the image for James is very poor. Ancestry only transcribed Ke for his mother's surname. It could go either way. Did you compare it with the July 26, 1832, record with Kennedy on NLI? Hs and Ks look similar on some records. Look at July 3, Judy Heffernan. The number of letters represented might point to a longer name than Kennedy. This James might not have any connection to your family.

Thanks Mary. Does Rootsireland not say where the marriage took place? That is not very useful for users. I did not find any traces of the Hennessey at NLI but the marriage could have taken place anywhere, I did see Hennessey on Griffiths for Ivy Hall which is in Templemore Parish. Just looking now at the Graveyard records for Church Avenue Graveyard in Templemore and there are Hennesseys in there. I will go down that route and see if anything appears. Quite often the marriages took place in the bride's Parish so it is possible this is where the record comes from. The year may not be transcribed correctly so I will have a trawl.

Thanks again for your help

Erin
